Vincent F. Filak, Ph.D., is an award-winning teacher, scholar and college media adviser who serves as a professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, where he primarily teaches courses on media writing and reporting. Prior to his arrival at UWO, he served on the faculty at Ball State University and also taught courses at the University of Missouri and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He also previously worked for the Wisconsin State Journal and the Columbia Missourian newspapers.Filak has earned the Distinguished Four-Year Newspaper Adviser award from the College Media Association for his work with the Advance-Titan, UWO’s student newspaper. great, quality book. It was well taken care of, no missing pages.

I'm probably not the target audience for this book since I was a communications major 25 years ago, but I've been putting my degree to use in other fields for a long time now, and was curious to see how things have changed with the advent of the internet, social media, etc.I found the book to be extremely clear and well organized. While not quite a "for dummies" book or DK reference book, it kept things short and extremely well organized so you can read it quickly and absorb all of the relevant information at a glance, or cover to cover if you prefer (which is what I ended up doing).Turns out all the basics are pretty much the same--what people care about, the importance of communicating your most-important information quickly (inverted pyramid), why accuracy matters, and why ethics are important (can't say thanks enough for mentioning "the common thread of basic human decency links us" in this era of clickbaiting and shock value). I thought the examples of headlines with "bad" / "better" / "good" examples were fantastic and would have saved me from writing many terrible headlines when I first started out. The chapters on writing for the Web and social media were on point (and admittedly were part of my career for several years; now I'm just an avid user). And the discussion questions at the end of each chapter were great ways to help people consider and apply the material. Overall I think this book does an excellent job of covering all the bases well, in a way that's easy to absorb.

This is an excellent, very dynamic introductory text on the discipline of writing for media – all forms of media from news to public relations to blogging and social media. It is written in a very direct, clear style and will quickly acquaint the neophyte with the craft of writing for their readers, which far too many writers forget is their purpose. You aren’t communicating when the reader stops reading before the end. There are 14 well-constructed chapters covering the Basics Of Writing, News Media, Marketing Media, Broadcast, Public Relations, Advertising, Social Media and more are covered. Additionally, vital aspects such as doing research and conducting interviews are covered. The list is extensive. Fortunately, the entire detailed index is available in the Amazon “What’s Inside” feature. If you peruse it, you’ll see that the high price is at least partially justified by the thoroughness of the coverage. I think this book is useful for even experienced writers because you never know it all.Jerry

I'm surprised at how much information is stuffed into this book. Part I is about the basics, such as knowing your audience, knowing your facts, and knowing how to use proper grammar. The next parts go into interviewing skills, various media writing, law and ethics, marketing and a whole lot more. Do you have a blog and no readers? You might want to check this out. I've read only a portion of the offerings here, but what I've read sounds spot on. A terrific reference for any writer.

Dynamics of Media Writing is an invaluable resource for anyone in news media, corporate media, blogging, etc. It covers the basics of writing and researching and expands to cover all aspects of media from blogging to broadcasting and everything in between. I've been in media for 30 years and can vouch for this being the place to start to become a better media writer.

About the Author

Irene Hunt was the author of many distinguished books for young readers. Her first novel, Across Five Aprils, was a Newberry Award nominee and received a Lewis Carroll Shelf Award. Her second novel, Up a Road Slowly, was awarded the Newberry Medal in 1966. Ms. Hunt was born in southern Illinois and received degrees from the University of Illinois and the University of Colorado. For many years she taught in the public schools of northern Illinois, and later taught psychology at the University of South Dakota. She died in 2001.

I read this book 50 years ago when I was in grammar school and it made a lasting impression on me. I always said I would someday re-read it. I finally have done that. I downloaded a Kindle copy, re-read it and I love it as much as I did 50 years ago! The characters really come to life and you feel their pain and pleasure as they live through the sufferings of the Civil War. Its obvious why the characters and their situations are so real: they were based on real life people, family letters and stories told by the author's grandfather, who was nine years old at the beginning of the war and was an eyewitness to this fascinating period of history. I've read Irene Hunt's other books and I like them all, but this one will always be my favorite. Its written for a young audience but people of all ages will enjoy it. I can see why it won the Newberry Award. If you read only one book this year, let it be this one!

I've heard this book recommended by many homeschoolers over the years as a must read during Civil War era history studies, and had purchased it for future use. Unfortunately when it was assigned the book was packed in boxes from our move so I bought the eBook version for the assignment! This fall I read this book aloud to my 7th grader as it was a parent-child discussion assignment.Set in southern Illinois, the story unfolds over five years, starting just before the Civil War and ending soon after the war ends. Jethro is the main character, a nine year old farmboy who is the baby in the family. Soon all his older brothers go off to war leaving his sister, he, and his parents to tend to the family farm which is a lot of work. Jethro's father falls ill and all the farmwork then falls to Jethro. Forced to grow up before his time given both the family's individual situation and the unrest in the country, this winds up being a coming of age tale. At the start of the story Jethro was a little boy and by the end he is a fourteen year old young man.Issues with the Civil War are debated and discussed in the story by the characters. An early situation is one of Jethro's brothers sympathizes with the Southerners and leaves the family to fight with the Rebels. This causes discontent, anger and hatred in the community, since they live in The North. Later the Creighton family is the target of hate crimes punishing them for the crime of the traitor son.Throughout the book we are informed of the happenings in the Civil War as the family hears news of various battles. Sometimes we read letters written by family members at the battlefront and other times we hear the opinions expressed in the newspapers. The opinions of the public about the Generals and President Lincoln are also shared as part of the story. I felt this showed that the issues were complicated and that even a family raised with the same values could not agree on which opinion was the right one. Later we wrestle with the issue of what should happen to soldiers who ran away from the battlefield and also what should happen to the traitors when the war was over.A subplot is the romantic love that develops between the fourteen year old girl and the schoolteacher who winds up fighting in the war. Her father had banned their marriage before he left to fight saying she was too young to marry. The girl matured in the war years and in the end we hope to see them united in marriage and hope he makes it through the war alive. (I'll not spoil the story...)I confess I am not a war story lover so in the parts that detailed the details of the battles my interest waned. However I was rivoted to the book and wanted to find out what happened to the Creighton family in the end. I would guess that any reader who likes battle details will be most interested in the book but honestly the story is solid and moves along quickly so even if you just want to know what happens to the individual people in the family and in the community you will enjoy the book.Character traits and virtues are clearly present in this historical fiction story. There is a lot to talk about regarding ethics and values as well as the topic of the Civil War. The book gave me a sense for what life was like for those who were both fighing in the war and those who were left at home struggling to make ends meet with most of the men in the family gone off to war.This is a solid, high quality historical fiction book that I think every middle school aged student should read, hopefully in conjunction with a study of The Civil War. I bet they'd learn a lot more by reading this than by reading a boring old textbook.

Jethro Creighton is a 9 year old boy living on a farm in Illinois when fighting breaks out starting the Civil War. His cousin, two brothers, and schoolteacher all join the Union army while another brother joins the Confederacy. When his father suffers a heart attack, the task of running the family farm falls on young Jethro’s shoulders. The story spans the entire Civil War, five Aprils from 1861 to 1865.Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt is a bittersweet book that reminds you that war is never tied up with a tidy bow. People die or are injured or can’t come home for various reasons. The story is told very well with the focus on how the war affected those left at home. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves historical fiction or the Civil War.

This was an amazing story about a family, it's trails, tribulations, and sorrow. But it was also a story of the incredible strength of the human spirit. Of neighbors who look out for one another and reveals the bigotry of those who hurt others for the lack of virtue in themselves.Young Jethro is an amazing young man who is forced to grow up and become the bread winner but throughout his trail he becomes a thoughtful caring human.The history of the battles is cleverly written into the fabric of the life's impacted.Great reading and ranks along side "Where the Red Fern Grows" and "Red Badge of Courage"

Across Five Aprils is one of the best Civil War books written for readers of any age. I have read it and listened to it many times. This recorded version is very good, but it is not great. As a listener, I have never been moved by the story as I was as a reader. Even so, I have gone back to the recorded version several times. This book introduces you to both people and history that you cannot bear to let go of.

I H-A-D to read this book in Jr. High, I think. Regardless of when, it made a lasting impression on me. I appreciate the style and substance so much more now than my 13 year old self did. The specifics I remembered are nits in the overall scope of the tale. I'm glad I re-read this wonderful book.

I have mixed feelings about the Walter Foster books. They have been around for years and know what they are doing. The quality is the best ever with good, high-gloss reproductions, and great content - materials, composition, step-by-step instructions, etc. But some of the artists and artwork included are just not my style and are too complex for the average beginner or advanced beginner. But there are some real gems in here of artists I like with doable instructions. There is enough in here to be very useful.

I had been using my old outdated copy for a couple decades when I decided to get a new one. It looked great, but was very dissapointed when I found that many of the things, like smaller campgrounds, were missing from the new version - even ones that had been on the old version.

This is pretty good. We use it (as opposed to just storing it on the shelf). But for the money, we like the Michigan County Atlas better. The roads seem better depicted, plus you get histories and points of interest.

The DeLorme line of topo maps is a travel must for my family. I have found more amazing little out-of-the-way places with these maps than I ever could have with a "take the next left" app. There simply is no alternative to opening the map and plotting your course for the day!

We took a remote vacation through northern Michigan. This map is great because it shows all the smaller roads; tells you what's paved and what isn't - gives a good sense for where the towns are and how big they are.

The DeLorme Gazeteers are a MUST HAVE for navigating and exploring, and a helpful backup for when your GPS/phone nav doesn't work well. I keep one in each car; this one replaces a well-loved, tattered, older addition.

I think I had too many expectations, perhaps, but it seems a bit harder to use than I expected it would be, and isn't as detailed as I would have liked. Still, it is much easier on the eyes than a typical map, and I am glad I got it.

This is a great gazetteer for the state, especially for those folks who do not want to totally rely on possibly erroneous GPS directions. I wish it included enlargements of the larger cities, though.

This is an excellent map. There may be a few more-detailed maps out there, but likely not many. I really like all the Gazatteer maps and this one is no exception. Highly recommended.

Second, it answers all the difficult passages you may have questions about like with Paul, doing away with the law, kosher laws, shabbat, etc. Sheds light on everything. Get this book!

I had a couple of little nit-picky disagreements with the text, but this may simply be that I lived in different places or travelled in different circles.Another commenter suggested this book missed a little on politics. I can't speak to that.The bottom line is that Iranians are gracious hosts, being in Iran is a delight, and I always felt safe and secure.

My wife and I are planning a three week visit to Iran at the end of April. Although we are frequent travellers to off beat destinations I must admit to a deal of trepidation about this trip. I found William's book immensely readable and full of balanced and useful information. I commend the book as a very useful introduction to travel to Iran.

Useful, brief and basic infirmatiom.

I had recently read Mike Matthew's book for men and have really been enjoying and finding success with his suggested training program. I loved how simple and straightforward the workouts are. This is all stuff that you should be able to do in an hour at the gym, and there isn't any silly, confusing nonsense. Strength training is really not that complicated. As Matthews explains, so many people are just confused by all of the misguided, contradictory information we're bombarded with.My wife has been going to the gym fairly regularly for the past few years, but her time there hasn't been very organized or focused. Occasionally she would ask me to write out "something to do" at the gym, and she would do that routine for a while. Its good that she has been going, but at some point you need practical advice and a program like Mike Matthews offers here to really get the most out of your time. i.e. Do these things on this day, this number of times, this many weeks, etc;I was really impressed by this book. She won't be asking me to write out "something to do at the gym" anytime soon. The day's training plan is written out clearly, page by page here for the entire year. She is set! More importantly, I was happy to see that she read through THINNER LEANER STRONGER and seems to have picked up a better understanding of both WHAT she is doing and WHY she is doing certain things.Fair warning: I kind of laughed during the first week when she was complaining how tired she was at the end of the day. She couldn't understand it. I had the exact same reaction when I first started Mike's program last year. For a week or so, I was incredibly wiped out at the end of the day. It was very disconcerting because we're both pretty active people and no strangers to the gym. Don't let it slow you down or worry you. My body adjusted and caught up to the new training, and I haven't felt that level of exhaustion since.I can't recommend this book highly enough. Every day I see people at the gym paying $50/hour to have a personal trainer do goofy, not especially effective exercises. For about $20, you can get the two THINNER, LEANER books, save yourself hundreds of dollars through the year and get way more out of your time at the gym. Be patient, follow the advice here and good luck!

I struggled between 4 and 5 stars.I recently purchased this book to start my one year challenge. I've already been weightlifting for a few years. I wanted to really make some better progress. I'm a total fan of Mike's books. I have both his cook books, thinner leaner stronger (on audio) and his fitness myths book.I have really attempted to use the information he provided to change the way I eat even more then I had, and to hone in my fitness routine. After two weeks I am already seeing improvements.The workouts seem easy and pointless but the next day you feel the burn.Just don't forget you have to push yourself to make the progress and be willing to challenge bumping up the weights.My only beef with the book is that it's geared to people with a gym membership. I have a home gym I've been slowly building and refuse to go back to the meat market where you can't get your hands on the good stuff (because of all the Meatheads hogging it while taking selfies)Some of the exercises I simply don't have the equipment for and there is not substitutions or modifications. I've tried to look some up but really.. there is not much I can find to be the equivalent to the leg press. But even so 90% of the exercises I CAN do!My only other beef is there isn't much on Max Rep. You need to know what that is to know where to start with his guide. It took me a little while of research outside his book to really understand that. It's not difficult or anything but kinda the key to unlock the rest of it.Otherwise I highly recommend it for people struggling on what the heck to do for a workout.It's certainly helped me fix my plan, and honestly simplify it.

I love having everything planned out! A years worth of workouts! Come on! That right there is incredible! 3 different splits ( 5,4,3 days) to fit your schedule! Use this with the TLS book and change your body forever! I’m only a few months in and my results have been spectacular!!

I bought this book at the same time I bought Thinner, Leaner Stronger (TLS) and once I bounced around from chapter to chapter I dove right in to lifting heavy. I began lifting (again) in early January and I did make some progress. But once I understood lifting "heavy" I was on a roll. I am only at the end of week two of Phase 1, 5 Day Split and I feel so much better about myself. I feel stronger, healthier from eating right and I am an already down a size in jeans. Lovin it! I lift in the mornings and have found that I am ready to work out again in the evenings and there's been a time or two where I had to keep myself from doing so.If your not sure about it just take the plunge and buy the books. At 61 years old this hard work is already paying off.

Talk about an eye opening experience. How did we not learn any of this in school? Shame. The imagery of the sewer system flushing the perceived worthlessness of life is a heartbreaking one. I'm a third of the way through the book. It's hard to read but entirely necessary.

The hardcover version includes, at the bottom of many pages, the author's notes. These notes should be considered an essential part of the book. They are interesting and designed to enhance and embellish the text. Do not purchase the paperback version, because it does not include those essential notes by the author.Obviously, this book (in hardcover form with the notes) is essential reading-- everyone who is able should invest the time to absorb this important, very moving, stereotype-shattering, great/classic work of non-fiction. According to Wikipedia, since 2009 this book (in Russian) has been required reading by Russian high school students (in Russia).

A must-read for those of us raised in comfort. A reminder that life needn't be (and through most of human history, wasn't) so comfortable. It is a reminder of the dangers posed by Authoritarianism, and a lesson that "evil" is not "out there" somewhere, lurking in a foreign land, but swirling amidst the "good" in the heart of every man. The vagaries of fate and disposition can leave any man as either executor or executed... or both at different times.A few quotes:"If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart? During the life of any heart this line keeps changing place; sometimes it is squeezed one way by exuberant evil and sometimes it shifts to allow enough space for good to flourish. One and the same human being is, at various ages, under various circumstances, a totally different human being. At times he is close to being a devil, at times to sainthood. But his name doesn't change, and to that name we ascribe the whole lot, good and evil. Socrates taught us: Know thyself! Confronted by the pit into which we are about to toss those who have done us harm, we halt, stricken dumb: it is after all only because of the way things worked out that they were the executioners and we weren't.”“Ideology—that is what gives evildoing its long-sought justification and gives the evildoer the necessary steadfastness and determination. Thanks to ideology, the twentieth century was fated to experience evildoing on a scale calculated in the millions. This cannot be denied, nor passed over, nor suppressed.”“There is a simple truth which one can learn only through suffering: in war not victories are blessed but defeats. Governments need victories and the people need defeats. Victory gives rise to the desire for more victories. But after a defeat it is freedom that men desire—and usually attain. A people needs defeat just as an individual needs suffering and misfortune: they compel the deepening of the inner life and generate a spiritual upsurge."

I have not finished this book but saw a review that said there were no author's notes in this version of The Gulag Archipelago.This is not true. This version, the red-covered Volume 1 of the Gulag Archipelago DOES have authors notes, and lots of them. However, the abridged version which is by the same publisher and has a similar cover to this book, does not have author's notes obviously. Just clearing up this confusion. This Volume 1 does have the original author's notes.

This is a must read and should be required reading at the universities. Young people need to understand that it is important to truly understand the ideologies that you latch on to as they have very real consequences.

One of the greatest tragedies in the history of mankind, period. The Soviets outdid Hitler and imprisoned and killed around 14 million of their own people. It's mind boggling! And it's true. Sadly, it's still happening, on a much smaller scale, but this system is still in use to this day. Solzhenitsyn has done a wonderful job of collecting numerous prisoner accounts and turning them into a very readable series of literature, despite the danger it brought to him and those close to him. He will always be a hero of mankind, in my eyes.

Read this book. It is one of the most powerful things ever written. It acts as a history of Soviet Russia, and a insightful depiction of Soviet the process of arrest in Soviet Russia. IT is difficult to summarize this aspect, but the ideas contained herein deserve consideration.Please read this book, if you read it seriously it may give you insights into human nature that you need.

This was an excellent read. Dr. Jordan Peterson was right to recommend this one to his fans.
