About the Author

Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934 to a family of Irish and Italian background. By the time he could hold a pencil, he knew what his life's work would be. This was one of my FAVORITE books as a child. My mother read it to me and I read it to my daughter. I purchased this book to read to a friend's children while they are here visiting. I grew up in Texas, and Texan's have a lot of state pride! It's not only about bluebonnets and the state of Texas, but the strength and courage of a little girl and her Native American culture as well as the overall caring nature for her community.

Found lovely handmade bluebonnet ornaments at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for our Grands. and knew the exact books from Tomie dePaola to accompany them. Beautifully written and illustrated, these books connect children to a heritage more eloquent and mindful than flash-in-the-pan action figures and dolls.

This is one of my favorite books and as a kindergarten teacher in Texas we learn about Native Americans and the geography. I love the bluebonnets here. This book is a beautiful story about a Native American girl who sacrificed her favorite object for rain to help her nation (tribe). It's one of my favorites and my students love it as well.

Beautiful story. We paired it with a craft. The kids drew blue bonnet stems on their papers. Then, using the bottom of a plastic soda bottle dipped in blue paint, we added the flower petals. It had a neat effect!

Love this book! Happy memories of this book being read to me as a child. Unfortunately, it came dented up on the corners which was a disappointment.

This was a "used" purchase for me, but the book is very clean [I used to buy "used" books in college that were really scruffy], It is very detailed and factual. It has maps, airline info, hotel recommendations [by your budget], wildlife sanctuaries, money matters, on and on. Also, a very good section on the ruins in Tikal, Guatemala which is just across the border. Tons of good information! Everything comes with phone numbers and/or internet addresses. I have already loaned the book twice to friends [and made darn sure I got it back, ha!]. I love this addition to my library.

I love traveling and Belize is just one of a few countries I don't hesitate to return to. It is a beautiful and lush country with friendly people and lots to do. This is a great book to introduce you to it and help you find things to do when there. What else can I say? I read this book before my first visit and read it again before another visit.Overall, I can recommend it without hesitation whether you are an armchair traveler or planning your first visit.

This guide is most suited to the roaming visitor who will only be spending a day or two at any one location. It gives recommendations for quick decisions on things to be done, and can be very useful for those looking for quick options. However, details on quality and prices are often lacking or are outdated. During a long stay in Belize, I found that we picked up some quick tips from the book, but soon relied on the more detailed information available on the internet.

We have used this book before which belonged to a friend. I wanted to purchase on for myself as we are in Guatemala for two months each year and since Belize is the neighboring country, we wanted to explore Belize. This book gives information on what to see, where to stay and how much one can expect to spend for food, lodging and such. I would recommend the book to anyone traveling to Belilze.

I thought the book was well written and represented a traveler's need fairly well. My only complaint is that I would have loved to read about more recommendations of things to do without a tour guide. Local insider spots and attractions, for example. Otherwise it was comprehensive and easy to navigate.

Very helpful

This book has a lot of information and is good for helping to determine what time of year is best to visit depending on what you want to do and see in Belize. It's a little outdated which was a disappointment. I'm not sure I would trust the recommendations for hotels and restaurants based on the age of the book.

I searched the trip advisor website for recommendations on a good guide book for Belize. Fodor's came highly recommended as Lan Sluder has spent a great deal of time in Belize. We are going to the inland/rainforest area and to the coast and this book covers it all.

Very informative!! My daughter is raising a rabbit to show in the FFA. I purchased this book because we had no prior experience of raising rabbits. It is extremely helpful. If you are raising rabbits for show, I strongly recommend purchasing the ARBA Standard of Perfection as a companion guide as well.

I bought this for my daughter and she loves it. She reads it almost every day. She is a 4H member and shows rabbits, and the knowledge she learned in this book greatly improved her project this year!

I've been going to Melisse for around 20 years. Less so as time as gone on, because things get more expensive. I've travelled all over the world and there is still no contest, it is my favourite place. Every plate is perfect, every employee you think is a manager, and the setting is always perfect. This is not a book for beginners. It is intimidating. It's hard. So you want to be Josiah Citrin?!?!?

Having had the rare pleasure of dining at Melisse, I had to have this cookbook. I may never tackle an entire recipe, but the attention to detail and incredibly faithful recipes would certainly make it possible for me to recreate some of the incredible flavors, textures, and beautiful presentations I devoured over the course of that five-hour slice of heaven. A good chef makes dishes that leave you stunned; a great chef is willing to share exactly how to make them yourself and to marvel at the exquisite ingredients, impeccable technique, and multi-step processes that go into each bite-sized morsel. Will a home chef ever be able to match a ten-course tasting menu? No, not without a small staff and a very large kitchen. But from this book, can a home chef learn the essential cuts, and how to make a perfect stock, and how to select fresh ingredients, how to combine them all in a memorable, once-in-a-lifetime meal? I can sincerely say the answer is "Yes." This cookbook is beautiful, informative, instructional, and gives a rare glimpse behind the scenes into one of the finest kitchens in North America. Highly, highly recommended.

Mélisse in Santa Monica is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. The food and service is always incredible and when I found out that the chef released a cook book I decided to buy a few as Christmas gifts. I had no idea at the time just how functional this book would be. It looks amazing and is loaded with tons of great pictures and that is what initially drew me to buy it. Since then I have actually used the book with stunning results. The recipes I've attempted have actually came out really well. I don't cook much at all so I wasn't expecting to be able to create these dishes. I've amazed myself and wife over the last few weeks and can't believe the dishes I've created. We're looking forward to our first get together with friends in which I will be the one cooking (first time, excluding BBQ burgers). I'm going to prepare a four course dinner from this book and have discovered a newfound passion in cooking. The lessons I've learned about produce, seasonal shopping, cheese, and cooking methods alone where well worth the purchase. I highly recommend this to seasoned chefs as well as amateurs such as myself.

An absolutely inspirational read. Probably not the most interesting read for the so called "foodie", but professionals will find this book an absolute inspiration. The pictures are amazing, the dishes are intriguing. A MASTERPIECE. My collection includes hundreds of cook books, from recipes to inspirational, food philosophy to biographies.... this one truly is a standout. The only issue I had was the time it took for the seller to send the book, I waited almost 2.5 months. Upside was the price I paid for it.

With this book, excellence was pursued and achieved. An inspiring culinary journey. I reference it often to remind me of possibilities and stars i shoot for! Bravo to Cjef Josiah Citrin!

I worked for Josiah in the kitchen at Melisse for a year. It was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my career. This book showcases just how relentless he is in his pursuit of his passion. His ability to compose a dish (and a menu) in fresh and interesting ways is unparalleled. Even if you never try the recipes in this book, you can look at the ways he combines flavors and learn from that. You simply won't be disappointed.

This useful but often flat history of legendary Motown Records is the first music-related work by Posner, who is best known for his books on the assassinations of John F. Kennedy (Case Closed) and Martin Luther King Jr. (Killing the Dream). As in his previous works, Posner is at his strongest demonstrating his meticulous research skills, most notably scouring court archives in Detroit to reveal details of how Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. often unfairly and unscrupulously dealt with artists whom he helped discover, like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, the Temptations, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder. For Posner, the history of Motown is the history of Gordy, who "was a manipulator who loved stoking competitive fires," according to Marvin Gaye. The book is probably the best single compendium of stories about Gordy and his business dealings with family and friends, although many of the stories have appeared in more restrained versions in autobiographies by Gordy, Gordy's ex-wife and Ross. Posner's wealth of detail will be of immense service to future writers on Motown. But while Posner is excellent at getting all the details down about the creation of many hit recordings, his writing doesn't convey the richness of the music itself in the same way as Nelson George's did in Where Did Our Love Go? The Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound. And while Posner shows that Motown was not a mob-run company, as has been implied in other books, his interest in investigating all of Gordy's business dealings leads him to suppositions based on depositions by ex-employees that he admits no one "was able or willing to confirm."Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

What? Another examination of Motown Records and "the great-grandson of a slave" and former Ford assembly-line worker--that would be Berry Gordy--who founded it! Well, the oft-told Motown tale is quintessentially American, what with Gordy and his stars' storybook rise from poverty to fame and fortune. Of course, Dame F didn't smile equally on every character in the Motown saga, which is why much of Posner's attention goes to the label's tangled legal machinations, perhaps best illustrated by Gordy's convoluted dealings with the Jackson 5, who weren't the only Motowners who resorted to litigation to remedy arrangements with Motown's boss; Posner includes details and documentation about matters ranging from Florence Ballard's dismissal from the Supremes and how the egalitarianly named trio morphed into Diana Ross and the Supremes to lawsuits filed by such other Motown mainstays as the songwriting team of Holland, Dozier, and Holland. (Was Motown VP Smokey Robinson the only happy camper?) Most of what Posner presents has been aired before, though seldom as relentlessly and with as much documentation. Like other '60s icons, Motown turns out to have had a side seamy enough to rival that of the Kennedys' Camelot. I knew this book was not very well researched from the first day I began reading. I returned the book before I finished the first chapter. Mr. Posner did not get even the most basic information correct on many artists. For example, when he gave information about the Motown singer Tammi Terrell, he said Tammi died at age 27. Tammi was only 24. He wrote that Tammi and Marvin's first hit was "Ain't Nothin' Like The Real Thing" when the first hit was "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Posner did not even mention this song in their duet hits. Posner also claimed that Tammi had been diagnosed with her brain tumor a year before her death in 1970. Tammi was diagnosed in 1967 and sadly passed away in 1970. If Mr. Posner could not even get the basic facts and correct sequence of events, how are we to believe any of his more controversial statements? I chose not to read any further. Don't waste your money on this book.

With an upcoming pilgrimage to Detroit and Hitsville on my horizon, I wanted to read a comprehensive history of Motown. Even though this is the only text I’ve read on the subject, I have a hard time believing any other book could be as absolute as Posner’s. It is thorough and informative without managing to compromise the high entertainment value inherent in the story. His delivery is steady throughout the different facets of Motown’s history – whether that’s the questionable ethics in Motown’s business practices, the various affairs and drug scandals, or the time spent making the music. It’s a page-turning thrill ride of a read.

This is one awesome read! Hard to put down. Very interesting history about Motown. Thank you!

The book is too long-winded. I had to search throughout the book for the "juicy" parts. I can see that the author did a great job on research though.

Very interesting book; I really like it

Knowing no history of Motown and it's beginning, it's interesting to hear the stories of Berry's very diligent family and their involvement in his company. It's a typical entrepreneurial story of a guy with an idea that sees a market that his unique talent can fill. Most aren't successful but with hard work, luck and talent, Motown is successful. It should be noted that his success is even more impressive in the civil rights environment of the late 50s/early 60s when Berry was starting his firm.The book does a great job of detailing Berry's techniques that lead to the success of Motown. In addition, individual artists, producers and writers are highlighted and their stories overlapped with the Motown story. If you like this music or grew up in this era, the names will all be recognizable.The final two chapters deal with Motown's foray into movies and the ultimate demise. I was not aware of their movie involvement and it's comical how Berry backed into the business and then makes all the mistakes people with too much money make when they are touched by movie magic. Finally, the music magic has gone, Berry's interest has waned, and an exciting new company is consistently getting beaten in the marketplace probably due to poor management.I strongly recommend this book if you have any interest in music, the culture of the 60s, or any pop music stars who recorded in the 60s. As to others complaints, they may be more knowledgeable of the Motown experience but I'm glad I read this book to learn more.

I pretty much knew nothing about Motown going in other than the obvious (started in Detroit, home of The Supremes, etc.). This particular history of Motown is quite extensive starting with founder Berry Gordy's life before he founded Motown and going all the way to the present state of Motown.There are comments and interviews from all of the major players from Berry Gordy on down to the producers, songwriters and other staff of Motown. It isn't immediately clear whether these are firsthand interviews or comments from other sources (i.e. Marvin Gaye's comments are necessarily from older printed sources) but all are presented well in context. You really get a comprehensive view of how Motown worked from all sides of the equation, not just the artists. It's also an eye-opener to modern readers about just how tough a time Gordy had breaking African-American records into the mainstream. It seems a no-brainer these days but obviously, it wasn't always that way.Keep your iPhone or tablet handy because you'll want to listen to snippets of the songs as they're mentioned in the book. The author describes the singers and songs in such a way that you'll want to listen to them as you're reading for a kind of interactive experience.
