I bought this book because of the positive reviews on here, and if you have prior knowledge of the New Year traditions, the pictures are really great to explore and go into. If you need to rely on the words to explain the concepts, however, this does not seem to be the best book. I read through it several times to try to parse out the good, but I can't help feeling confused. On the page about the chinese new year parade, the author mentions jugglers throwing balls and then the flap has a juggler. To my knowledge, jugglers are not that significant to the parade. Author could have easily written "Fireworks go pop pop pop" or "The lanterns are all lit up", and those would have been a bit more meaningful. On the New Year's Eve feast, the author writes about duck, crab and pork, which are all yummy things that may be present in many people's New Year's feast but again don't have much significance. The line could have been replaced with "There was fish, chicken and dumplings", which are more symbolic dishes.I tried to think of some comparison, and it might be something like: On the Easter Egg hunt, we fill baskets with grass. Look at all that grass! OR At our Thanksgiving dinner, we eat cranberries, stuffed mushrooms and wild rice.Lastly, I read other commenters talking about how the author uses the Cantonese Gong Hay Fat Choy, but I dismissed them because I thought I could just substitute the mandarin phrase. Unfortunately, the Gong Hay Fat Choy is part of the rhyming scheme so I cannot use the mandarin phrase without messing up the words and rhyme.I will keep the book because I can describe the illustrations (which are very nice and have a lot of "hidden" meaning and significance, hidden because you won't know unless you know) and because I don't like returning things, but if anyone else was looking for a supplement to help teach Chinese New year customs, I would look into other resources.ETA: I bought this book to read to my son's pre-k class so I'm not looking for a serious treatise or anything, but I couldn't picture myself reading the sort of meaningless words that accompanied the nice pictures. If anyone else is in the same boat as I, I'd recommend borrowing the book first and reading it before purchasing.

My family lived in China for five years, including the first three of my son's life. Now that we're back in the States, I want to find ways to continue my son's awareness and memories of China. This is a cute book that seems to adequately show true and realistic Chinese customs for the Lunar New Year. HOWEVER, heads up that the Chinese used in the book is CANTONESE - not Mandarin. "Gung Hay Fat Choy" is Cantonese for "Happy New Year" and is spoken in Hong Kong and very southeast of China. Mandarin is the "official" language and is spoken by a majority of the country. "Xin nian kuai le" is Mandarin for "Happy New Year." Please note, this is simply an FYI, not a general positive or negative thing. I was disappointed because we were in a Mandarin-Speaking city, but it's as simple as changing those small parts. Not a big deal

Great multi-cultural book for toddlers and big kids alike. My 15-month-old loved the flaps and her older brother enjoyed reading the words himself. Vivid colors and illustrations really get children in the holiday spirit. Highly recommend as a Chinese New Year/Lunar New Year gift.

Grandson was so proud to show this book, and he loved that every page gave him something to open and show him a surprise picture behind it.

It's a cute book, and I love that it teaches kids about the basics of Chinese New Year. It's also beautifully illustrated. The flaps aren't very engaging, they're a bit subtle (14 month old LOVES flap books), and the book isn't a board book style and so is probably meant for older children.

Illustrations were nice but the storyline was a bit all over the place. Some things seemed random and didn't follow much of a storyline. I read through 3 pages and decided to return it.

This is a good book for Chinese New Year discussion. The lift-the-flap suprise additions to the storyline are a wonderful bonus! I would recommend it along with the Dancing Dragon, Bringing in the New Year and My First Chinese New Year. .

Read this to my son's pre-k class for chinese new year. Nice illustrations and covered many traditions that were interesting. The kids enjoyed the book and were craning their necks to get to see each page.
