Lyell's writing style does not produce a "page-turner" but even so his straight forward narration of his adventures is interesting enough. He is thoroughly knowledgeable and often discourses on the flora and fauna of the area. A good read for anyone interested in the Dark Continent.
While not exactly poorly-written, Mr Lyell's style is very scanty on interesting details and anecdotes about his travels in what are now Malwai and North-eastern Zambia regions. Also, he kind of jumps around quite a bit rather than a proper travelogue. There are far more similar but much better written and more exciting books from the early days of African big game hunting than his volume.
