This book is the guide to C#, especially if you want to focus on the language.I should disclose I am an experienced C# programmer, but after not doing as much for a while I jumped back in with this book and it really got me ready.It contains examples, but also explains clearly each concept. It's thorough and detailed in many areas where others aren't. It isn't one of those books that focuses on forms and Visual Studio, this gives you a solid language foundation.You're going to find this book covers a very wide range of the language and lots of concepts. A must have if you're going to do any serious C# development.

The focus is more on what is going on behind the scenes and how .net works. It will make you a much better C# programmer vs. teach you how to code. Probably best as a secondary source / guide. Great book but don't make it your first C# book. Probably best digested in small doses. Also by skimming through the book you can get a high level (i.e. generalized idea) of different advanced features of C#. Not a whole lot of code but there is tons of examples on MSDN. Overall well written and not boring.The only negative for me was that sometimes I wished the explanations were a bit simpler or straightforward for ~5 - 10% of the material. But this wasn't a big deal--there is so much info on youtube, MSDN, and various blogs. Probably is best as a reference or 2nd C# book. Overall I recommend it.

I must confess though that I haven't read this "cover to cover" yet. My initial impression is very favorable. I thought when I ordered this book that it was just a later edition of Jesse Liberty's C# book. But, if it was meant to be (as the cover art suggests) it is completely re-written and updated for C# 5.0. Some of the explanations in this book are more in-depth and there is less dependency on code examples than in Liberty's "C#" that always seemed to introduce idioms that hadn't been fully discussed in the text. The subjects (chapters) that I've read seem very clearly written. I look forward to a thorough read.

This is just how I think a book about programming should be. Starting from a fairly basic level, it gives you a complete overview without going into unnecessary details. Throughout the book, the author explains the reasoning for the language design, be it historical, related to Java, Win32 or something else. He also provides best practices, and last but not least: the code examples are excellent! The have the minimal number of lines needed to show the approach, and never give you the feeling you need to have Visual Studio open to really understand.

I love this book. I have the Building Windows Applications VB.NET/C# book that Jesse Liberty co-authored and with this book you have an indispensable pair of developer books. Lots of neat little tricks in here.

Great book for version 5.0. Easier than Maruc C# to follow along with. Good examples, and easy to read.

Well written book that I use often. Able to jump to variety of topics and learn them deeply, quickly with good flow. Many times it's much better than searching for a topic on the web.

Have to agree with most of the other reviewers. This is an excellent book. Took advantage of "Buy Used" and got a good deal. You'll find that working through the examples will give you a comprehensive understanding of both C# and the .Net Framework. Will be looking for more from Ian Griffiths.

The book's title is misleading. It only dicusses Buddhism.

Somehow, I expected this book to be about the "Civilization of Ancient India and Southeast Asia".It's not. This book is about the foundation of Buddhism, Buddha, Buddha's disciples, Buddism's spread, and the art associated with same.Don't get me wrong - the photos are outstanding! The art is very well described and the context provided is excellent. But the title of the book is misleading.The illustration on page 82, of the Buddha being protected by the multi-headed serpent deity Naga, puts me in mind of art from the Andes showing a deity with serpents surrounding its head.

A wonderful standalone follow-up to the first book in the series, The True Queen retains all the vivid and inventive fantasy worldbuilding I loved about Sorcerer to the Crown, and adds even more delightful, profoundly interesting characters. Muna was an absolute delight to read about; Zen Cho has a remarkable talent for multifaceted, well-rounded characters with genuine human complexity. In addition, I loved getting glimpses of how my old favourites Zacharias and Prunella from the first book were doing, as well as more focus on Janda Baik and Mak Genggang in particular.I really enjoyed the plot as well; it twists and turns in ways that both give the satisfaction of correctly read foreshadowing and the pleasant wow of surprise.

I loved the first book and this one was not what I was expecting (bought it just off loving the first without reading the summary), but I loved where the story went. And all the central characters were fascinating.

I really wanted to like this book, but sadly it wasn't even very interesting. I rarely ask for a refund, but this book is way too expensive for such poor development, the story ideas are good, needs a good rewrite.

Loved this book. Jane Austen meets Harry Potter. It’s a separate story to the previous book but an excellent read.

But along the way, they run into trouble, and it’s now up to Muna to save her sister.Just like it’s predecessor, The True Queen is a gem of a novel, sparkling with humor and brimming with heart. Multiple sections made me laugh out loud, and I kept reading bits and pieces out to anyone around me. I’m so glad this book exists. If you haven’t read Socerer to the Crown, I think you could read The True Queen without it (although the first book is wonderful too). The protagonists of the first book only appear in supporting roles here, and the plot of The True Queen stands on its own.Of course, the events in The True Queen are influenced by what came before. As Muna’s staying at the school for female mages (and desperately pretending to have magic herself), you see the struggle of getting English society to adapt to magical women. One of the other major characters, Henrietta, is a teacher at the school and lying to her family about it, trying to avoid their disapproval.I guessed some of the book’s plot twists but it still had plenty of surprises in store for me. Besides, the pleasure was in the journey more than the destination. I love Cho’s writing and the world she presents, a Regency England infused with magic and where multiculturalism is actually recognized. And have I mentioned the dragons? I love dragons, and this book has QUEER DRAGONS. It doesn’t get any better than that.When I first read The True Queen, I immediately popped onto Twitter to scream about how I’d just read the sequel to Sorcerer to the Crown and how it was amazing and had queer Malaysian witches. This book made me so happy, and I’m glad it’s releasing soon so everyone else can read it too!I received an ARC in exchange for a free and honest review.

This entertaining fantasy tells the story of two sisters - Muna and Sakti - who washed up on the beach of Janda Baik without any memories of their past. They are taken in by Mak Genggang, primary witch of the island. Sakti becomes an apprentice magician while Muna, having no magic, finds work in the kitchen.Muna is determined to break the curse on her sister but Mak Genggang can't do it. She decides to send them to England and her friend the Sorceress Royal in hopes that she can break the curse. She sends them on a path through faerie to save them the year-long sea voyage. Only Muna and Sakti are separated and on Muna manages to arrive in England.Muna needs to hide her lack of magic and find a way to rescue her sister. But faerie is closed from England and the queen of the fae has declared war on England. It seems that a magical ornament has been stolen and she is convinced that the culprit is in England.As Muna learns more about the conflict and more about the past she doesn't remember, she makes friends with Henrietta Stapleton who is teaching at the academy for young women learning magic. Henny is a good friend of the Sorceress Royal. She is also hiding her magic from her family since it is not at all socially acceptable for a woman to use magic.Muna also gets involved with dragons in her quest to find her sister and finds herself on a rescue mission to save a mortal magician kept confined in the dragon lands until he can be gifted to the fairy queen as a snack and in reparation for the dragons having lost the queen's ornament.This was a fun story with entertaining worldbuilding and a nicely developed main character in Muna. Fans of fantasy will enjoy this story.

BUY IT! The author has produced an excellent, holistic, and credible system to successfully achieve a rewarding career in the music or entertainment industry. Although this book largely focuses on the music industry it is extremely valuable for establishing a successful career in other fields such as the sports industry.This book, unlike many music career books, brings a focus on other music career jobs beyond performing artist opportunities such as musicians, vocalists, bands, and singer-song writers.I appreciated the author sharing his personal journey to music career success and his candid description of the detours and obstacles he encountered. His experiences obviously led to the preeminent career management system he offers to the reader.The author’s five rules and ten steps to success in the music industry are priceless. I would recommend, at a minimum, all high school and higher education music curriculums include this book in their reading list. Moreover, I encourage music teachers and professors to incorporate the author’s principles in their lesson plans and career counseling activities. Finally I commend the author for offering his availability via online and voice communications.

I found this to be a very informative, insightful and helpful read from the author who has lived the experience of having a music career for most of his life. While being in a band or dreaming of being a top performer on The Voice may not be the focus of this book, the author lays in out in numerous charts just how many different types of entertainment jobs there are to be had, the duties required and salary ranges. Use the internet sparingly in your job search; seek out people instead. The writing style is friendly and effective and you get the sense he is sincerely there for you--even gives out his phone number. A well-worth it, not overwhelmingly long read that seems like an essential piece of your toolbox if this is a path you're interested in pursuing.

I made a mistake buying this book, a starting guitar player looking for live performance tips and advice as a side hobby and instead found a music industry guide. The book is geared towards different entry points for the music field as a profession and it actually helped me to better understand what I love as a hobby. The funny thing is that I'm a programmer/anayst/manager/whatever as needed and this book actually works great also for the whatever professions out there - pull out the music and insert programming code for the next great widget/ analytic report for the product type target company produces/ possible health care resources that would be great for the quality department of a hospital, etc.. I realized I had made a mistake in the purchase after I started to read but since I paid, I'm stubborn and I had to read - then got interested, then impressed and found it actually helped me understand much about the industry behind my guitar I love to play. I still need to find my guitar tips and tricks for live performances but this book is well worth the price and more, the time taken to understand what you are reading!

This book was a quick read for me on a plane ride. I have 3 kids spread from high school to middle school to elementary school who are all very into music. This was a great read on the types of careers and options they have out there. The author does a great job level setting you up front that if you are trying to have a career as a musician or singer in a stadium this is not the book for you. If you do want to make a good living in the music industry this seems llike the perfect read and I am getting it for my middle school and high schooler immediately. I like that the author has real world experience and was able to detail and share a couple of mistakes that he made which we all do from time to time.  There were quite a few things you can do in the industry that I did not know about at all and having salary data was also an eye opener for some of the different things they can do to make great money! I think the best target audiences for this book is a high school or college student or anyone who is on the outside and really would like to be working in the industry. Â

David Ruttenberg provides a specific action plan in pursuing a career in creative, interesting areas of the music industry. He shares his career choices, experiences, and mistakes with vulnerability, honesty, and humor; it is so valuable to be able to learn from his interesting journey. He clearly defines how to differentiate ourselves from others. So many of us rely on the web to find out information- this is information that we can all access; however, Ruttenberg shows us how to make personal contacts so that we can understand the industry, companies, and needs of the companies in a way that the general public does not. We then can learn about our creative area of interest from the people who have their fingers on the pulse of the company and the industry. I am so appreciative of the ubiquitous wisdom in this book.
