Great autobiography by one of my favorite NBA players. There are no deep, dark secrets or controversial stories told within. It is simply his take on his rise to NBA fame and what he went through to maintain his family life. This book proves Stockton is the person us fans always hoped he was, humble and human. Can not recommend this book enough!

My husband just thoroughly enjoyed this book... though I've never been a sports-inclined person myself, he's the complete opposite, and over the course of our marriage, there are certain athletes of whom he's spoken extra enthusiastically about - Mr. Stockton is one of those people. Each year at Christmas, I'll purchase a few sports-related books (usually biographies or autobiographies), trying to recall people he's mentioned, and when I saw this book I knew it'd be a winner. My husband had never been a "book person", having struggled in school, so it was a surprise to him (and a delight for me) to realize how much he enjoyed reading when the subject interested him! Each night he'd share with me an observation or two from the book, and though I didn't read it myself (the 5 stars are from him), I can say that Mr. Stockton is every bit the quality individual I'd always heard my husband describing him as. He tells me this book is definitely on his "re-read" list.

I loved this book because it reinforced the incredibly strong ethical, character I always believed Stockton possessed. It is refreshingly fun to read about a public figure that I would be proud to have my children look up to.

He didn't talk much about Karl, Jerry, Jeff or Larry. I was hoping to hear more about the finals too. I also felt he was pushing the "I'm humble" a little too much.

John's autobiography was as simple and humble as he always seemed to be. He goes into great detail explaining his take on the limelight, which is only one of many topics that shed more light on his life and career than probably any other source ever has. One particular topic, his love of his family, struck special chords for me personally.You're not going to get a raw history of the game of basketball according to John. You're not going to get too many juicy details of players at the time. You're not going to get a self-serving account of his accolades. On the contrary, you will get to see players as John saw them: friends, people, and competitors with real lives and feelings. You will rarely hear of an accolade; instead, you will get an account of all the work he put in.If you want the story of a flashy athlete, complete with scandal, money, and sex, this is not the auto-biography for you.If you want to hear about the values of hard work, friendship, and family this is for you.If you just want more insight on the best pure point guard to ever play basketball, this is definitely for you.

A great book about a great player. If you're a fan of John Stockton and would like to know some things and people that shaped him as a person and player you'll enjoy this book. Please note that this book does not go into details about particular games and doesn't spend much time on the two championship series against the Bulls. I still loved the book but just wanted to put that out there so people don't go into it expecting that type of detail.

This is one of favorite books. His candid advices and humors are--bon mot. Most of all, he is a good role model, a mensch!I highly recommend this book to anyone, esp., teens. My oldest nephew is 6, but when he is old enough, he will have this book from me.How often could you find yourself agreeing with your childhood idol?Thanks for writing this great book, Mr Stockton.

About the Author

Linda Mullins was born and raised in England. She emigrated to America in 1969. Her present collection of more than 2000 bears began in earnest when her husband, Wally, gave her an antique teddy bear as a gift. That hobby escalated to a full-time profession and today Linda MullinsÂ’ knowledge and expertise are in demand throughout the United States, Europe and Pacific Rim. A Southern California resident, she produces the regionÂ’s most popular two-day show: LindaÂ’s San Diego Teddy Bear, Doll & Antique Toy Show and Sale. It is held twice a year. The January show of 2000 is the 42nd of these events which continue to draw international attention because of the excellent antique, collectible and artist teddy bears, dolls and toys on exhibit and available for purchase. In addition to collecting, speaking, educating and traveling, Linda has written 16 books and countless articles on the past, present and future of teddy bears. After an all-out effort coordinating an auction of international artistÂ’s bears designed to raise funds for Kobe, JapanÂ’s earthquake victims, Linda Mullins became instrumental in shaping that countryÂ’s Huis Ten BoschÂ’s Teddy Bear Kingdom in Nagasaki, Japan. She is a supervisor and honorary director of the museum. I have to disagree with the previous reviewer, and ask whether or not that reviewer actually tried making the pattern. I have made three of these splendid bears, and they came out beautifully. This is a wonderful selection of different, appealing bear styles, you are sure to find many that you love and wish to make. The instructions are easy to follow. The ideas you get from this book will serve as a springboard to designing your own if you wish. An excellent book for anyone interested in making miniature bears!!

I gave up on the price of this book coming down and made the plunge and purchased a copy. As a bear desingner and crafter for over twenty five years I can say for sure that this book has priceless ideas and creative bear projects for anyone who would like to create with a pattern or to use a pattern as a jumping off point for your own creativity. I can recommend this book without hesitation and will use it from time to time for inspiration or for a pattern from the experts.

I highly enjoyed this book,I thought her use of big wave surfers kept a book about waves lively.She had my attention the entire book,I never knew what would happen next.Would have been nice with more info about rogues,just because I find them interesting,but it turns out even the experts don't know a whole lot.For a while I thought she had a crush on Laird Hamilton,but gradually assumed she just admired all big wave surfers.She was very knowledgeable about their sport,the ups and downs.This book is about two subjects-big wave surfing and the science of waves.The subjects intertwine of course and I think she did it masterfully.Sure she uses flowery language a time or two,but I took that in stride.Maybe women just like more adjectives in their non-fiction than men.She also warned about climate change and the changing of storms.There was much knowledge to be gleaned in this one.

I agree with several of the previous reviewers. The Wave albeit well written is 1/3 about wave science/historical events and 2/3 "surf city" - it appeared that Susan was more enamored with Hamilton and his accomplished surfer colleagues etc. than depth in actual oceanographic wave behavior. That said - the relative contribution of what she did elaborate on wave science and historical contexts was quite good. But there was SO MUCH diversion to beach personalities and tribulations I really skimmed over all of these chapters to the far more interesting segments. As far as i am concerned the Devil's Teeth is her most excellent signature work (not Wave!)

I grew up swimming in the ocean during the summers. I got boiled and roughed up more than a few times, and I have always had a deep respect for the power of waves. As a young adult, I was at the North Shore of Hawaii one day when the waves were large but not enormous (about 20-30 footers), and I was bowled over. It is an experience I can never forget. Because of that, I have been fascinated by imagining waves much larger than those (which seems almost incomprehensible). Casey does an amazing job of conveying what enormous waves are like, both in their power and their immensity. Her research and interviews are compelling, and unlike some readers who have commented on this being an ode to Laird Hamilton, I found those parts riveting, which many characters, not just Laird. This is a great book. Scary, provocative, and a nonfiction page-turner.

"Except for luminous glints of turquoise at its peak, the wave was sapphire blue, gin clear, and flecked with white. If heaven were a color, it would be tinted like this." This quote is Susan Casey's description of seeing a wave close-up at Jaws, a Maui surf spot known for huge dangerous waves.At fifteen, my father gave me a 9ft Ole surfboard--it was too big for me and I could barely drag it down the beach. I wanted to look cool with it under my arm like all the surfers did and I wanted more than anything to be the girl that the Beach Boys sang about in Surfer Girl. It wasn't going to happen, but that big board attracted surfers who wanted to help me get it into the water and teach me how to paddle out. I loved watching them catch the waves. Years later my love affair with Ocean waves and surfers really took off when I watched early surf films and saw the shots Greenough took inside the tube of pristine waves; their glassy faces a peek into another world. So when I heard about Susan Casey's book, The Wave, I had to read it and she didn't disappoint. It is the perfect blend of surf stories from some of the best big wave riders and the guys who help them make it out to those waves along with the guys who help in the rescues when the waves eat them up and spit them out; and a look into the history, physics, and science of freak monster waves that appear out of nowhere and cause massive destruction. Read this book and it will change the way you look at the seas around the world. An entertaining and educational 5 star read for anyone who loves the Ocean.

I also found the book to be a little too melodramatic and hero worshiping. I would have liked a little more regarding the science, as I am a beginning windsurfer, so I did have a interest in better understanding the ocean.It seems we have a little more information on rouge waves than the Tligits who believe the source was a sea monster named Kah Lituya,who shook the bay when upset and turned those he killed into grizzly bears looking for other victims.However, in the end we still do not understand what we do not understand to have a thory about "non linear waves." Easier to understand the sea monster theory.She does visit various organization and scientists, but does not bring the information together. Perhaps it is due to all the research is independent and not coordinated.There are many interesting areas, where she touches on, but, it leaves you asking for more. You could open any chapter and begin to read, there is no cohesiveness or message to the total.Further, the book is filled with various lines suited for a samurai movie.I realized it would be hard to find a group who had been through more together. They had staked their territory in an uncharted realm, a place where the ocean didn't necessarily allow people to be.He didn't hype his achievements or lose his bearing. The more amzaing his feats were, the less he said about them.If I scare myself once every day, I'm a better person.It helps to have that little jolt of perspective that life's fragile.Fear is powerful. You get a lot of energy from fear. Without fear, humans wouldn't have survived. Maybe I'm the most scared.And, at the end, it left another question for me. Is big wave riding a sport? Although, she strongly notes that Laird hates Billabong's commercialization of big wave riding, primarily as it draws untrained surfers into greater dangers, she does seem to endorse the event.

About the Author

Simon Henein was born in 1973. He obtained an engineering degree at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 1996 and went on to complete his doctorate at the EPFL in 2000. In 2001, he published the book "Conception des guidages flexibles" which has become a reference in precision engineering. He then joined the Centre Suisse d'Electronique et Microtechnique (CSEM), Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where he conceived and developed mechanisms for robotic, aerospace, medical and watchmaking applications. He pursued his research career at the Paul Scherrer Institute, Villigen, Switzerland, where he developed instruments for the Swiss Light Source Synchrotron (SLS). Since 2012 he is associate professor in microengineering at the EPFL, holder of an endowed chair in micromechanical and horological design (Instant-Lab). Lennart Rubbert was born in 1984. He studied mechatronics at Institut National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) in Strasbourg where he got an engineering degree in 2009. He also obtained in 2009 a Master degree in Robotics and Control at the University of Strasbourg. He completed his Ph.D. on the design of compliant mechanisms for surgical robotics in 2012 at the University of Strasbourg. From 2013 to 2015 he performed his postdoc at Instant-Lab (EPFL) with Prof. Simon Henein. In 2015, he became assistant professor at INSA de Strasbourg in the mechanical department and is also a researcher and scientist at ICube in the Control Vision and Robotic team. Florent Cosandier was born in 1984. He obtained his master's degree in engineering from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2007, after completing his studies during the master thesis at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). In 2013, he obtained his Ph.D. at the EPFL, for which he was awarded the Prix Omega scientific award. He then joined the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (METAS) for a postdoctoral position, where he developed precision mechanisms for the new Swiss Watt Balance. In 2014, he joined the Centre Suisse d'Electronique et Microtechnique (CSEM) in Neuchâtel, Switzerland, where he currently develops precision flexure mechanisms for watchmaking, aerospace and metrology applications. Murielle Richard was born in 1984. She obtained her Master of Science in Microengineering at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in 2008, with a special focus on robotics, autonomous systems, machine learning and mechanical design. In 2012, she completed her Ph.D. in Manufacturing Systems and Robotics in the same university. Her research topics covered high-precision and industrial robotics, as well as compliant mechanisms. She presently works at ETA Manufacture Horlogère SA, where she designs high-precision and compliant mechanisms for manufacturing and assembly systems. My only complaint is the size of the text. I didn't get it just as a coffee table book, and I hoped to be able to read it WITHOUT resorting to reading glasses or a magnifying glass. Great book, however.

I bought this as a gift for a friend I recently inducted into the world of engineering. I wanted to read it before I sent it off, and wow... I really need to get my own. Since I was old enough to bike to my hometown's university bookstore, I have LOVED Wooden Books; the sames goes nearly 10 years later. This is a straight reprinting of 6 books rebound into one volume, all which would be ~$10 each:1) QED2) Useful Mathematical & Physical Formulae3) Essential Elements4) Evolution5) The Human Body6) The Compact CosmosHow could you do better for $12?I'm getting a copy of Quadrivium too. So should you.

This is a great book with a little bit of everything. I really like the way the book is organized, and I can read about just a topic or two, and sit for a longer read. It has great coverage with interesting topic, it's well written, and is bound well. The cover is beautiful. The photo doesn't do it justice. But better still it's contents are great.

I have to seriously question all the glowing reviews of this book, for it is not at all what it claims to be. The general description would have one believe it to be an overview of scientific method, with a reasonable introduction to the basic litany of foundational knowledge in a broad spectrum of scientific subjects. It's more like a disorganized hodge-podge of nearly random-seeming sections. The format, too, does not lend itself to developing any kind of systematic understanding within any given topic area. It's a page-per-topic affair, with the text neither effectively leading into, nor concluding any of the particular areas of interest. Instead, the explanations jump right into the middle of a topic, and make use of concepts that have not yet been introduced. The end result is that the book is extremely superficial, in a very annoying way: i.e., in some respects it's almost laughably simplistic, taking pains to explain elementary-school science and math, and then in other respects it drops mention of much higher-level concepts without actually offering any context or enlightenment on those concepts. From my view, it's virtually unreadable.

My 14 year old really wanted this for Christmas. He found it in a big chain book store and I refused to pay that price for it. So, I ordered it from amazon and we were very pleased with it. The content is fascinating and organized in a manner that is easily understood. Definitely a recommendation for anyone wanting to expand their limited knowledge in the science department!

My bright middle schooler loves this book. He says it covers everything! Books are comprehensive, but information is presented in shorter chapters that are not overwhelming.

This is great for anyone who wants to get a taste for some various mathematic concepts without going to deeply into any of them. You can find the one that inspires you and find further reading elsewhere. Very cool sketches too, fun to read

I bought it as a present for a very curious and scientifically gifted 13 year old boy. He was overjoyed when he opened the book. It is a really stunning cover.

Ben Hogan discovered golf as a fifteen-year-old caddie. He turned pro at seventeen, joined the tour full-time as a nineteen-year-old in 1931, and has won nine pro majors. Ben Hogan's swing was the template for the modern swing. For a piece of golf history, this book is still a worthwhile endeavor to read. Although some clubs are not widely used such as the Brassie, 2 wood, 4 wood, Hogan's advice regarding the fundamentals and strategies still stand the test of time.The book is well illustrated with helpful captions, although some drawings are misleading and should not be mimicked. Hogan was not known for his putting and the putting chapter is not very useful.Reading into the mindset of the champion and the vignettes of golfers in his era, are quite fascinating, and I thoroughly enjoyed the historical perspective.This book still stands as a classic in the Silver Age of Golf. I highly recommend reading it.

I studied Hogan's 5 Fundamentals written in the 1940's till I wore it out and true to his word I was a bogey golfer after less than a year. Now at 69 I am again reeducating myself in the form and mental side using this book on Power Golf. I did not know it existed until I began to look for additional material that he had written. As usual with Hogan he has distilled the core points in such a way that if used and incorporated your game will inprove tremendously. The equipment, balls, etc can change but the fundamentals of a classic swing were first written and explained by Hogan and they will never change. Great material to add to you understanding and game.

... even though it was written before Hogan's "Five Lessons." Power Golf addresses some issues that Five Lessons does not, like putting and sandplay, for example. However, in my opinion it would be advisable to digest Five Lessons first, and then open up your game with Power Golf, in that order. Five Lessons will instruct and help you discipline yourself on the fundamental swing, and Power Golf will liberate you further. Myself, I was reassured by Hogan in Power Golf when he gave me permission to "go ahead and hit it as hard as you can" when it comes to the driver... he says you might be a little wild at first, but once you "groove your swing," you'll be glad you've been swinging with power because that's the point of a driver... I had always been a little hesitant to let it rip, but now I've been smacking it but good! Thanks again, Mr. Hogan.

Save your money and buy "Hogan's Five Lessons of Golf" instead. This book was written later in his life when he finally settled on his "swing", it covers all the important points in his "Power Golf" book, only better, because he is confident with his "swing" by this time and is better at conveying his thoughts; and ... its a few bucks cheaper, to boot!

Best golf book ever. Reading this book truly changed my entire game. I was a 14 handicap and with just the grip change alone I started hitting twice the greens in regulation in my rounds. 6 months later I am now a 10 handicap. Ben Hogan was the best, this helps you get a repeatable swing that you can work on.

This book, intended for golfers who want to improve their game, was perfect for me.Everything in it has helped me in my golden years. I wished i had it when i was young, it could have improved my game.

Okay, it's not in the same league as 5 lessons, but it's still a good read. Definitely worth adding to your golf library. Wishing for a digital version, but for now, paperback will be fine. Get it and improve your long game.

This is a good read. Expands on Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons." Both books helped my game.
