About the Author

Josh Hamilton is an outfielder with the Los Angeles Angels and perennial Major League Baseball All-Star. Drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays in 1999, he made his Major League debut with the Cincinnati Reds who then traded him to the Texas Rangers where he played for 5 seasons including trips to the World Series in 2010 and 2011. I read where Josh Hamilton is probably not going to return to baseball in 2017 due to another knee injury and it's a bit of a shame that this is how one of the most fascinating stories in baseball is coming to an end. Beyond Belief is Josh Hamilton's testimony , describing what it was like ( to be a rising talent), what happened ( his fall into drugs) and what it is like now (his fight for survival and how he faced his demons). For anyone who has experienced addictions or is close to an addict, this will be a very uplifting testimony. He is honest and doesn't pull punches. He provides hope for the addict, not criticizing the 12 step programs but acknowledging that Jesus Christ is his higher power.

The New Testament tells a story of Jesus healing a demoniac. After his spectacular recovery, the healed man begged Jesus to let him travel with him, but Jesus told him to go back to his own city and tell them there what the savior had done for him, and that's what he did. While I was reading "Beyond Belief", I thought of that New Testament story, and found myself wishing that I knew more of how Josh's recovery impacted his marriage, his family and his local church involvement, in other words, his "own city". One reviewer mentioned that there seemed to be a little too much Josh and not enough Jesus in this story and maybe that's what Jesus was trying to prevent when he cautioned the former demoniac not to go national too soon. Still, "Beyond Belief" has a lot of food for thought. Josh's unblinking description of some of the things his addiction did to him might serve to unmask sin in all our lives. I was also intrigued by some of the comments that were made about recovery like "...any thought that stays in your mind for more than eight seconds can result in action" or "Addicts who rely on faith-based recovery have far better success rates than those who don't." The epilogue reads like a real-life Roy Hobbs story, but I think the description of his first post-reinstatement minor league game moved me the most. I'm pulling for Josh, Katie and all the Hamiltons.

Started reading this hoping it would be enlightening and motivating for an alcoholic family member (who had also used harder drugs in the past). Not great writing, but not bad. Realistic, entertaining, and inspiring until I read about Josh 's public relapses after publishing. Considering the decades of hiding and lying I have seen within my own family, temporary sobriety but underlying belief "a little alcohol here n there makes my life better" (in between atrocious binges, drunk driving, and near death consequences), I can't help help but wonder how much we don't know about Josh 's private thoughts and motivations...and no longer think this book is one I want can wholeheartedly recommend. It may help some understand the struggle addicts face, but I was not and am not convinced Josh fully understands his own personal needs/thoughts well enough to stay away from "recreational" drugging and doping...especially in the case of socially approved drinking.

Subtitled Finding the Strength to Come Back, this painfully honest and inspiring book tells how a high school phenom almost destroyed his body and his life through drugs and alcohol. Never once shifting the blame beyond himself and his actions, Hamilton details his descent into a hellish life that had him smoking crack in his grandmother's house to the journey of faith that slowly drew him back to the sport where he was so gifted and blessed as a child. One of the most poignant events for me was when, upon his return to the sport that he loved, he was face to face with the tatoo artist who had been a significant part of his drug-crazed life. The individual was there with his son for an autograph (I didn't even know he had a son, thought Josh). Hamilton realized that, as others had forgiven him he could do no less for this person, giving him the autograph with no questions.This fascinating book also includes some baseball stories as well, including the time that Mariano Rivera threw one of his never seen change-ups to strike Josh out (Josh was expecting his trademark fastball), or the heartfealt conversations with other players while on base, encouraging his recovery.Pulling no punches, this book even included an update on Josh's recent fall back into alcohol while on the road. A portion of that story is even told by his wife as she learned of his actions. Once again, no excuses were made. Josh was fully accepting of his responsibility and accountability, noting that his sobriety is a journey and an on-going battle.

This autobiography is unique because it seems to have been written by Josh and edited by Tim. His language and voice is simple, honest and easy to respect, and actually from Josh. When I say the language is simple, it really is like Josh is talking to you, telling his story.The book is about Josh's life and starts with a little bit about his youth. Most of the detail is in his adult life, that is after signing, up to his come back with the Reds. The stories in the book have great detail, and come together fairly well. His story gives you a good view on addiction as a disease. Hamilton also details his thinking at the time of the stories, even in his "out of mind" ones.The book's heart lies in between his signing and right before his comeback. He speaks about his relationships and how they affected him and how he affected the relationships (both positive and negative). The story is told very linear, and it works out really well that way.All and all, a great American story about Pure Natural Talent, addiction and downfall, and taking advantage of one last second chance. A must read for nearly all ages (some of the drug stories may not be great for kids to try to wrap their minds around or hear)

But more helpful are the reviews in learning if the book is for me. Not only that but other readers often give book titles and names of authors they liked that were of the same vein and caliber! I first found this book in the school library when I was in 8th grade, and devoured it. I bought my own copy when I was a young adult, and have probably read it 6 times over 30 years. The story is one of courage, ingenuity, fortitude and a love of nature. Eric Collier and his wife Lillian built a cabin in what was then wilderness in British Columbia, Canada. Their son, Veasy, was born and raised there, helping his father trap and hunt. The three of them helped restore the beaver population that had been trapped out before their time, which in turn helped restore ponds and marshes to the area. The return of water brought back the wildlife and the balance of nature was restored.Below is a link to several interviews with Veasy, who is now retired and living in a town near where his parents homesteaded. I was a little disappointed that he claims that some of the stories in the book to be exaggerated or fictionalized. This is not some mind blowing book about this or that, instead, it's just a story about a man and his wife, battling to survive in the Canadian wilderness in the early twentieth century. It's also a story about BEAVER . These creatures are so important to sustainability of forests in N. America, and the author backs this up within the story. I really enjoyed this book, a story about a time and way of life that is gone and may never come again. You could tell that the people in the book are or were good folks, salt of the earth types, and through this story they have a message to the selfish trash producing weirdos of the 21st century, a message that I am sure will be ignored by all.

Great book about the Canadian wilds of British Columbia. It is a great book about one family's gift of rehabilitating a wild area where the beaver had all been trapped out. Very informative and inspiring. It was one of several books that had my family buy property west of Williams Lake, B.C. in 1968 and it was where i built my first log house. It's been over 46 years now and I'm still building log homes.

I first read this book about 53 years ago I figure. I realise now it painted for me the stark consequences of raping and over-exploitation of the natural environment. Eric Collier came to wild British Columbia after the beavers had been hunted to extermination and the devastating cascade of events that followed. Driven by the desire to see the land and the extraordinary wildlife return to its previous abundance, as described by an Indian elder who had seen it all, he began by restoring a couple of beaver ponds himself by hand. The uplifting and exciting sequence he set in train reversed that spiral of degradation and Nature stepped in to give him a hand.With his wife and son he restored the whole region to life and abundance again.His writing skills ensured I traveled the journey with him and I felt the joy of his achievement. What a story-teller! What a story - and it's true! What a lesson I learned from this book! I have been a conservationist ever since I first read it.I have met others who have read this old book back then, and it affected them in the same profound way. It is a treasure!

I really liked this true account of living in the wilds of British Columbia, Canada. What I found most endearing was their need to bring beavers back to the wild and how the beavers helped the family make a living.

I didn't want it to end. The work that Eric Collier and his wife and son did to change the landscape of that part of the country is daunting and unforgettable. And the fact that this was all accomplished without some government agency breathing down their necks or forcing their choices made it all the more heroic. I was cheering for the beavers many times. Leaving the reader with the feeling of "Faith in mankind" hardly comes close. This one is a bookshelf keeper. I will be ordering the hardback version for sharing.

This is a fine book about life in a remote part of Canada in the early 20th century. I totally enjoyed it. You can also check online the interview with the Colliers' son to verify what actually happened and what was enhanced a bit. But it is truly worth reading.

I am writing this for the whole series. Honestly I was not very thrilled after the 1st book, but I forced myself to go forward, hopping for the best. 1st person dialog is used, which makes a good development of the main character, however, because everything is seen through the eyes of one person, the rest of the characters lack depth, and it is hard to create a bond with them. As you encounter them many times through the story, you get to know them better, however, it is not ideal. You should keep going after 1st book, so do not give up just yet.The writing is getting better as the story goes on, less cheesy sex, and more action and adventure. In the last book the author gets half the book from 3rd person perspective, which is clearly an improvement in the writing style, and lets you get to know Mordred better.The narration is quite good, but it takes a little to get used with the narrator, which has some interesting intonations. The last 2 books are narrated by somebody else, which is not a plus(even if narration is good), as you get used with the original one through the previous 5 books.This being said, I recommend the books, and looking forward to follow the story into the Avalon Chronicles!

Unlike several reviewers, I paid for my issue of this book -- any bias is entirely my own!This is the best book of the series to date, considering all story aspects including "Flashback" timing and their tie-in with the present, the storyline, revelations, and the general story flow. There were a few "uneven" portions of the story's pace, though nothing that would throw the reader out of the story.We learn perhaps more than we want to know of Merlin, and are introduced to several new characters. Mainstay characters such as Nate's best friend Thomas and his daughter are deeply involved within the various plots.Unlike several other books, Nate does, for the most part, act like we might expect a 1600 year old sorcerer to act. Nate doesn't "gain in power", though that is something that will happen in the near future. Many questions are answered, but there are many questions remaining. We begin to better see a more far-ranging ARC.I'm looking forward to the next book...

This was the best of the series. So mich information imparted about Nate's past and so many clues to the future. Even a sad occurrence or two. While Nate helps to try and rid Avalon of a threat, his past continues to keep haunting him.At some point it gets hard keeping the past amd the present separated but as usual this is action packed and great storytelling.Nate confronts someone and i wish there was a bit more finality to it.There is also a huge reveal at the end that i think some of us might have guessed. While Nate does rack up a few more enemies, for once people get to see amd come to the side of the Nate we know and love.I can't help but love this series.

My least favorite of the Hellequin books so far. Nate doesn't act like a careful, thoughtful killer, but more like a petulant child. He underestimates his foes throughout this episode. Fortunately the ending makes up somewhat, for the ham handed Nate of the rest of the book. Hopefully the series will return to form. Tom out

This series has been amazing to me. I am always dying to finish the book but I want to prolong the story. There is a reason to this. I only read on my lunch breaks at work to escape the stress of the day. I leave my lunch breaks happy each day because of what I have read. I have to fight the desire to finish the books outside of work. I also know the story is not finished and another one is around the corner. I don't want to have to wait for the next one for however long it will take.

**Spoilers**First thing to know - THIS IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE END!The series has been brilliant - original, well written and fantastical characters that draw you in. One supreme evolution was Remy, his sense of humour in this book made me chuckle aloud for the first time in years.What would have been good is if this book resolved Nate's origin story, but instead it remains a mystery which opens the door for an entire new series. That alone allows me to forgive the author as long as the next book comes out soon...Keep writing sir, you have an amazing talent!

A couple of typos are the only reason I gave it 4. Took me out of the story for a sec each time. Had to get back into the flow. For those like me who care about the occasional missing word, it doesn't happen too often.... otherwise it would have gotten less stars. Only one typo actually matters, the others are few and minor. Changed one character's age from 72 to 27. That is the only one that was truly glaring.

Why did I give this novel four stars instead of five. Though the author is close to an Ian Fleming, they still have a ways to go before they reach the normal five of a Stephen King. However, I truly enjoy the character this writer has created, their ability to make this world believable and I love the simple yet artfully placed lures that succeed time and again to hook me as a faithful reader.

Central Banks On the Ropes? By Jack Rasmus is a tour de force of both the history of central banks and how they have degraded into weapons of mass financial destruction in the service of the 1%. Historically central banks have always been in the service of elites; first, to provide loans to Princes, Kings, and Emperors for their endless wars; more recently as the lender of last resort to financial institutions who are too big to fail and too big to jail. It is the latter function which has brought us to the financial abyss, an ocean of debt of over $20 trillion, broadcast world wide to the 1% who have used the electronically printed money as fast as they receive it for gambling in financial assets, off shoring jobs, buying stocks and bonds, and generated rivers of dividends to themselves. It is part of Jack Rasmus’s major achievement that he unravels the layers and layers of deceit by the central banks and the all too trusting media to show that the publicly announced goals of lender of last resort, maintaining inflation and money supply goals, are empty ideology. Which is why central banks are “on the ropes” and we face the financial abyss: the central banks cannot stop the flow of billions of electronically printed cash or raise interest rates significantly without plunging the markets into financial crisis. But it is the rivers of cash distributed world wide that has prompted bubble after financial bubble and will lead inevitably to the next crash.

This is an update and refinement of Rasmus' earlier landmark books(SYSTEMIC FRAGILITY... ---216---and EPIC RECISSION )

This book does a better job of explaining how central banks work in any of the others I have read. Two mainstream books, Mohamed El-Erian's The Only Game in Town and Banking on the Future: The Fall and Rise of Central Banking appear to be limited by the obligate blindness that bankers must have to the fact that there is no correct way to do it. The central bank's goals are too elusive, the tools are too blunt and ineffective, the process is inherently political, and there are demographic and economic variables at play which are beyond the central bankers' ability to control. Losing Control: The Emerging Threats to Western Prosperity is another book that covers more or less the same ground, though I think Rasmus does it better and with less bias.Other books such as The Creature from Jekyll Island: A Second Look at the Federal Reserve and The Secrets of the Federal Reserve are conspiratorial. The Jekyll Island does a great job of describing how the Federal Reserve was established, but it ascribes to conspiracy that which can be better explained by mere self-interest. The bankers look out for themselves. The second book edges close to describing a Jewish conspiracy. As Kevin McDonald writes in The Culture of Critique: An Evolutionary Analysis of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements, the Jews have evolved to look out for one another, but that does not rise to the level of conspiracy. Murray Rothbard's 1962 What Has Government Done to Our Money? was a prescient vision of things to come.The Tyranny of the Federal Reserve, not widely read, is valuable in that it puts the operation of the central bank into a much broader perspective. It addresses an entire range of tyrannies: those of debt, usury, fractional reserve banking, gold, central banks, war, free trade, mass immigration, the media and public education. This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly is a survey of fiat money regimes going back eight centuries. They all fail, and all for the same reason: politicians cannot control themselves when it comes to printing money. James Rickards makes the same point well in The Death of Money: The Coming Collapse of the International Monetary System.Rasmus' book is the most valuable of the group, effectively enumerating and describing the tools, policy objectives and targets of the central banks, and evaluating their effectiveness in light of their own targets and their ability to manage their respective economies.Rasmus recommends a constitutional amendment to address the problem. The effect of the amendment would be to redress the abuse that he sees in the present system, whereby central banks worldwide are generating a great amount of liquidity most of which flows into financial instruments instead of the real economy, benefiting the rich and starving pensioners and savers.He recommends democratizing the governance of the Federal Reserve, taking it out of the self-serving hands of the bankers.This would be a good start. The book does not address larger issues, such as the coming demographic crisis as world populations age.This is as good a book as one will find describing the problems as they exist and how they came to be. One cannot fault the book for failing to recommend a complete solution. Nobody in the world has found one. For this reason prognosticators are increasingly forecasting a global collapse, a reset that will require something new to rise from the ashes. Only between the lines does Rasmus suggest that that's where things are headed.A five-star effort. The best single book I have read on the Federal Reserve and central banks. I am including my (somewhat unedited) reading notes as comments. See my reviews of the books cited in this review for similarly detailed analyses.

Joe Navarro is my favor writer.This book is a guide not only for security personel and Law enforcement. It is also useful for every HR manager! Joe Navarro ptesent in this book his professional experience with an academic way.and this combination make this book really unic!

A good overall explaination, a lot like a text book. Which is what it is supposed to be, just makes it difficult to read.

Another great book for cops easy reading

worth no more than $19.95. the publishing industry needs book format regulations. the font and spacing in this book are excessive. if this book were written with a standard 12 font and single spacing it would be half its size. its a book on interrogation formatted like children's bedtime story collection.

Excellent book with advanced and practical information on interviewing.

Having had Mr. Schafer as an instructor and reading the book has helped me in my day-to-day work. These are good building blocks/tools to add to your tool box that are usable with your personality skills. I highly recommend this book to new employees to use as a framework and for the experienced employees to add to their tool box.

I've been in law enforcement for a little over 10 years. I have read the body language books by Navaro and quite frankly I expected more from him in particular. I would recomend this book to someone just starting out. Most of the principles you can use successfully while on a traffic stop or while taking an initial report. But let's face it, if you're CID you should already know most of these techniques. A good book for a beginer but not very advanced.
