Good description and examples of how the Northwest styles evolved. It's a little dated now, but serves as a good reference for me with respect to maintaining our condo buildings' style intent.

Readers of shelter magazines will be familiar with the format of these 30 stories about modest, custom homes in the Pacific Northwest and the laid-back lifestyle they afford their owners. The book begins with a poetic description of coastal life recognizable to residents from Northern California to Southern Alaska, but the author's obvious focus is on Portland, Oregon. Almost two-thirds of the houses in the book are in or near Portland. Her description of the development of a regional architectural style in the mid-20th Century is illustrated with "early modern classics by five masters," all of them from Portland, as are all seven of the named second generation architects. Seattle's Thiry, Kirk, and Terry "helped to adapt the International style to the Northwest," but none of their projects are presented. The collaboration of contemporaries in the Bay Area and Vancouver, BC, in creating the famed modernist style of the Northwest is unmentioned. So the focus here is narrow, despite the broad, region-embracing title.Similarly curious is that only half of the homes presented could be construed as even tangentially expressive of the modernism usually associated with the term `Northwest Regionalism' and suggested by the cover photo and first chapter. Noteworthy among these are houses by George Suyama, James Cutler, and Patkau Architects (the only Canadian entry), and these are spectacular. Instead the emphasis is on eclecticism with Arts & Crafts, Cape Cod, Japanese, Art Moderne, Post Modern, and even lodge styles all present. The common threads are purportedly the use of natural materials and proximity to nature, but even these themes are frequently undercut, especially in the chapter on urban loft living. A `Northwest style' not centered on modernism fails to cohere.

I liked the book and it was excellent in the areas covered, but it missed the largest part of the US PNW geographic area - the high deserts and dry land conifer forests East of the Cascades in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. As one born and raised in the Northwest, I would really like someone to write a book that acknowledged and showed the styles of architecture and interior design found in places like Pendleton and White Swan.Most of the PNW is not wet and cloudy, but drier with a harsh and stark beauty that can clearly be seen on the old highway between Ellensburg and Yakima, or cruising between Bend and Madras. Or in the forested places near La Grande and in Northern Idaho. There is the Horse Heaven and Pend Orielle country as well, which have their own forms of architecture that pay tribute to a beautiful and fascinating, and not always kind country.I wish for a book on PNW style that covers more than the narrow coastal strips and Willamette Valley.

Who knew the Pacific Northwest had such an eclectic range of home styles, from Japanese influenced designs to rustic log cabins, to stunning urban lofts. This book is written in an accessible (versus snobby) style, warmed by humor and with an irreverent eye to the iconoclastic bent of the nation's current power center. Beautiful photographs and "real" homeowners--not royalty or billionaires.

I am on my way to becoming Field Service Supervisor, and I am trying to study as much as possible out there. Not every point applies to my scope of work, but the book does engage you to see how others approached issues and helps to rhetorically ask questions.The book can be easily read in one sitting or multiple sittings as there are 42+ 3-4 page chapters.

Pretty simple stuff, but really does a good job of putting it down in black and white what service companies need to be doing well.

I found it interesting that the authors of this book, Rosemary Coates and Jim Reily, did not know each other before writing this book. They spent two years interviewing executives from various companies and combined that information with their experience in global manufacturing and field service to create this material.There are many tips from executives in large companies like Cisco and General Electric that will help readers think bigger when it comes to field service. So many topics are covered in this book that it will make your head spin: procurement, mergers and acquisitions, counterfeit parts, maintenance contracts, trunk inventories, dealing with international staff and more. The information is broken down into bite sized chunks that are easy to digest.My favorite rule was #4 "Form Customer Advisory Boards to Build Loyalty". The time to get customer input is before a crisis happens. The authors recommend that you invite your top 20% of customers in terms of revenue and find out what they want and what they need. This ties in nicely with a later chapter that discusses customer surveys and feedback.If your company provides field service to customers then you absolutely must read this book and buy it in bulk for your employees. Smart readers will recognize that they can take the material in this book and create a training program for employees that will catapult their field service above and beyond their competitors.

I always enjoy reading Ms Coates books! The 42 rules for Superior Field Service takes a very challenging topic and breaks it down into clear bites! I especially liked Rule 17 - It is Good to Be Green as this is my passion. RoHS and REACH (the EU version and now in other regions such as China) have forced technology to innovate and remove identified hazardous substances from their product offerings. Many brand managers assume that the requirement is 'one and done' when the product ships to the customer as brand new. Most managers completely forget they have to sustain compliance until the END OF SUPPORT which can be years after the last unit shipped. Consider this is just one facet of field service and you can see why you need to read this book!

I thought the authors Rosemary Coates and Jim Reily did an exceptional job defining real solutions to the complexities of the day to day challenges of a field service organization. Great ideas and insights into a multitude of issues and systems. I also found the shared knowledge from top executives extremely helpful in my own organization. Since implementing some of the ideas from the book my customers are happier, my systems better organized and I’m even seeing an impact on my bottom line. The rules are easy to follow and easy to implement. I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed this book – I refer to it often and recommend it highly.

I highly recommend this book for some one looking for ways to improve their Field service operations. The rules are very easy to follow and easy to implement if you choose to do so. I have been looking for this type of book for over six months now and I'm glad I finally found it.

About the Author

Nick Hughes is a former French Foreign Legionnaire, bodyguard to the rich and famous and martial arts instructor. He holds black belt status in several styles of Karate, Aikido, Judo, Ju-jutsu as well as ranks in military unarmed combat and filipino martial arts. He has both boxed and kick-boxed professionally and competed in Judo competition internationally. He appeared on Spike TV's "Deadliest Warrior" in the series penultimate episode about the French Foreign Legion versus the Gurkha. He popped up on Paladin Press' radar and filmed a series of instructional DVDs and began working on his 2nd book on self defense. He has also produced an app called I-bodyguard which is the salient points from his book which is available on both I-phone and Android. He is now on a quest to train half a million people in self-defense before casting off his mortal coil and teaches Warriors Krav Maga out of NC and various affiliate schools. So the book, How To Be Your Own Bodyguard. Short review, go buy it. Doesn't matter what art you study, or if you don't even study martial arts. Your mindset will change after this book, and if you put into practice even half of what Hughes recommends, you will be safer.Now this is admittedly a self published book. It does have a few errors in it, which are easily over looked. The most glaring flaw, is that later in the book it makes mention of there being a previous edition, but there is no indication on the cover nor the title page, what edition it is.At the beginning, Hughes spends a fair amount of time discussing mind set, looking at the differences between actual self defense, defense of self, and sport fighting. With a couple of war stories mixed in, of being a body guard and defending himself from multiple attackers.He also discussed the mental preparation states, DEFCON levels for personal protection.The chapters are kept short and tight, Hughes doesn't waste words, with each chapter being only a couple of pages on the average 3 or 4 pages. At 304 Pages, including the index and biography of the author, it's a lot of information.Hughes goes into just enough detail about how the fights work, how adrenaline affects you and the OODA loop, without boring you.After moving out of fight theory, we get to actual more meat, such as safety tips for being at the ATM, Taxi, Public transport, and clubs / restaurants. As well as home security tips and much more.Towards the end, Hughes goes over the commonly found martial arts, with a reasonable and objective list of pros and cons for each. Doesn't claim his art is the best, which is refreshing. And then discusses how to find a good instructor for your chosen style.He includes a home safety checklists at the end, which is useful and constructive, I find myself wishing he had included more, covering the other locations he had previously discussed in the book.Hughes was considerate enough to includes an index, which is really helpful when you want to find something on a particular subject or topic in the book really fast.Finally of course is the biography, which covers Hughes extensive martial arts and military training. Over all, this book belongs on your shelf, and not just collecting dust. It should be referenced several times a year, if for no other reason than to keep the information fresh in your mind so you can protect your family.

This is one of the best compilations of good defense advice I've read (and this is one of my favorite reading topics). There is a lot of valuable information, presented in a clear easy-to-read style. The author obviously knows his subject inside-out. But he manages to make it accessible to average non-expert readers. He covers a wide range of issues, making this a good all-in-one reference. It's also a great thought-starter leading to deeper study of specific topics. I especially appreciate the emphasis on all-around self Protection in contrast to fighting-only self Defense. I was so dishearten when I read at the end of Retribution that Petit was going to stop writing for a while. Imagine my surprise when I saw Inevitable for sale. I bought it today at 1 and now it 1 AM and I just finished it. Yes I still have to get up in 3 1/2 hours for work but I thoroughly enjoyed the book. The depth of the subject matter was very surprising. I would compare it to the PTSD that our solders go through today. I have mentioned in my other reviews that each of my three son's have served and between the tree of them they have been deployed 5 times. They have told me of their nightmares and the difficulty they have had to go through and how hard it is for other people to understand. I also appreciate how Petit make no excuses for the terrible actions of the villains in his stories or the fact that they have earned the punishment that they eventually receive. I honestly feel that too many times we stand up for the rights of the perpetrators and forget the anguish and pain of the victims in our modern day lives. All I can say is that if it had happened to my daughter I would wish for the courage and fortitude that Lin showed. Great book; can't wait for the next one.

First of all I really enjoy this writer's stories even with the editing errors, names being switched, spelling (minor), but in this one not sure if CJ took literary license or just doesn't know Wyoming. The Black Hill are Northeast of Laramie not Northwest. That would be the Laramie Mountains. A gunfight 40miles Northwest would put you somewhere around Medicine Bow. Not trying to be picky Just Sayin...

CJP. has. penned a bounty hunter western whoosh takes place in Wyoming around 1870. A departure from his regular route home leads him to be introduced to a blue eyes woman. The blue eyes woman and the women of Two extended families are kidnapped. The hunt is on. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS

So glad you did go ahead a write another story. I have enjoyed every single book and am looking forward to the next one. Please do not stop writing. I always feel better after reading one of your books.

I was really excited to find a new CJ Petit western. I have read all of his books. The books are intriguing. The characters and plots keep me reading. I like reading his books because they are always well written and never boring. Evil shows itself in Petit's books,, but goodness stands strong. The characters are realistic; they make me want to meet them! Thanks, CJ Petit for your great stories & goodness prevails!

This is one fan who is very grateful that Mr. Petit did not procrastinate all the way til spring to give us another book. Once again he has found innovative story lines to bring to live the characters to provide great entertainment for his readers. Looking forward to the "rest" of this one, in his next book. I have been a big fan of Mr Petit’s western books and I have read many of them a couple of times. He changed the formula in this book with the protagonist “winning” the girl early on. For some reason that and the protagonist’s journey to overcome his guilty conscience made this a less than enthusiastic read. Usually, once I start, I can’t “put down” his books until the wee hours of the night. That was not the case with this book. Mr Petit’s last book, Retribution, was outstanding. Perhaps he set the bar too high with that effort.
