Blaming Mothers: American Law and the Risks to Children’s Health (Families, Law, and Society)

Review

"Blaming Mothers is gripping and powerful. It is also chilling as Linda Fentiman unmasks society’s penchant for shaming and punishing mostly young, poor women. She reveals subtle but profound gender and racial biases that pervade public discourse and drive prosecutors and judges to unfairly punish pregnant women and mothers. I strongly recommend this captivating book. It is beautifully written, weaving together vivid stories of women’s lives and impeccable scholarship. Anyone concerned about gender, children, and poverty will have to read Blaming Mothers."  -Lawrence O. Gostin,Founding O’Neill Chair in Global Health Law, Georgetown University“Advanced undergraduate and graduate seminars in sociology, psychology, women’s studies, and law will find it informative, stimulating of much discussion, and empowering.” “Blaming Mothers is...filled with an incredible amount of diverse information in the form of facts and examples, tightly interrelating the fields of law, psychology, and sociology.”  -PsycCritiques"Professor Linda Fentiman offers a probing analysis of a society and its government that blames mothers for various social ills  and conditions that plague American society and that intervene during pregnancy and motherhood..  Professor Fentiman carefully studies this phenomenon and exposes the undercurrents of classism and racism that correspond to it.  She explains how the pernicious nature of poverty creates impacts that result in significant health harms, including higher rates of lead poisoning and asthma among low income children of color.   Sadly, in those instances too, mothers are blamed--sometimes civilly and criminally, making it risky to be a poor mother in America."  -Michele Bratcher Goodwin ,Chancellor's Professor of Law, University of California, Irvine"In Blaming Mothers, Linda Fentiman considers why mothers in the U.S. are so often regarded as hazardous to their children’s health.  In such areas as breastfeeding, lead poisoning, and childhood diseases like measles, Fentiman explains the psycho-social origins of much mother blaming, contrasting it with the scientific bases of actual health risk.  Blaming Mothers connects the dots across policy areas to provide a comprehensive answer to what can be done to improve children’s health when Mom is properly relocated to the sidelines. This is a wonderful book not only for those in medicine, public health, child welfare, education, and law but also for mothers and their families, that is, for everyone."-Carol Sanger,Barbara Aronstein Black Professor of Law, Columbia Law School

Once again thanks to Jana DeLeon for allowing authors to contribute to the Miss Fortune Series. It gives her fans our "fix" on Fortune, Gertie, Ida Belle, and of course Carter, until a new novel is published by Jane DeLeon. I love this novella, it was perfect from start to end. It followed Overdue but each is a complete novella which do not have to be read in sequence. Can you imagine women who won the 1982 Championship Derby are going to have a rematch in 2016? Team members from the original Sinful Derby have died since then, and Fortune has been recruited to skate. No problem, right? One of the members from the other team has been injured. Blame has been placed on someone Ida Belle and Gertie do not believe did it. The young man being blamed will not give an alibi. Fortune, Ida Belle, & Gertie must solve this before he can be officially charged with a crime and even Ida Belle is now being suspected in this crime. Enter Lila Rose Fontaine (from Overdue) who has multiple personalities. One of her multiple personalities saw it and that personality comes and goes. So Fortune, Ida Belle & Gertie must solve this mystery. It has great dialog, all the elements you expect, plus you will have a great time with this story. You will not want it to end.

If these weren't characters from another author's world building, this would have been a good story, well-written and executed. However, the humor for which these characters are known is missing from this story. I liked the idea of a roller derby rematch and would have liked to see the elbows flying during a rematch. Instead, very little has to do with the rematch, which, surprise, never occurs.I would vastly prefer to see this stories written with an entirely new set of characters in a new location.

I have loved all of Sheri Hearn's Fortune World books I've read so far. I figured out who the culprit was pretty quickly in this one but that didn't take away from the enjoyment as I didn't know how it play out. I can still imagine Gertie in the hot tub and have to laugh. Can't wait to read the next one. I've already bought them all.

I really like that the author of the Miss Fortune series is allowing others to write using her characters. It adds to her stories and gives more volume to the people of Sinful. And, I never want the series to end so it's a plus that way as well.Thanx so much. While I was holed up for Hurricane Irma, I read Hurricane force, and now found these other additions as well.Awesome!!! :)

I thoroughly enjoyed Overdue 2, which can be read as a standalone or as a sequel to The Miss Fortune Series: Overdue (Kindle Worlds Novella). Ms. Hearn writes true to the Miss Fortune canon, and in fact does an amazing job of capturing the "voice" of the originals. At the same time, she populates the Sinful universe with her own complex and quirky characters--Lila Rose Fontaine, Miss Cookie and Delphine, and of course the denizens of Mudbug Roller World.

I chose this rating because it was still a story about Fortune. But it wasn't. A Hearn twist. I would recommend this book because it has a good story line. It's a Fortune story that keeps you reading because you want to know what happens next. Read it and draw your own conclusion and you'll see what I mean.

I loved Overdo and Overdo 2 Rematch was just as good. I can't believe how much trouble these characters get into and out of. The thought of 2 seniors joining with a CIA agent who is hiding from a hit that was ordered on her seemed ridiculous till I read Overdo and Overdo 2 did not disappoint as sequels sometimes do. Can't wait to read more.

Miss Fortune's adventures are fresh, fun, and unbelievable. I think that is why I enjoy them so much. Shari Hearn does an awesome job of keeping the characters as Jana Deleon created. I've thoroughly enjoyed this book and the others she's written in this series. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Sir Malory's Le Morte D'Arthur is probably the best know telling of the Arthurian legend. It was published in the 15th century and has been the basis for many movies. It was a compilation of the known Arthurian tales of that time. Sir Knowles took that work (about 400 years later) and refreshes it in The Legends of King Arthur and His Knights. Therefore, much of what this book contains will be very familiar to the reader if they have read Malory's work. Sir Knowles collaborated with Lord Alfred Tennyson in the conception and execution of this book.In the foreword, Knowles' Wife writes that Lord Tennyson referred to himself as the foremost scholar of the Arthurian legends and said that Knowles was perhaps the next behind him. A bit pretentious perhaps but it does give a bit of a pedigree to the contents. Don't let that dissuade you from adding this work to your collection. I have not read Le Morte D'Arthur for some time but it certainly seems that Sir Knowles has added a few stories and tales that perhaps were not available to Sir Malory. I do not recall them at any rate and would need to do a side by side to verify that. All in all this a nice collection of Arthurian tales and stories. It is certainly well worth the price, "free".

This is the book I would recommend to anyone just beginning to take an interest in Arthurian legend. It is based on Sir Thomas Malory's classic Arthurian work, Le Morte d'Arthur. So you get the same basic story without so many details, and it is easier to read. (It flows more nicely, and it is clearer and more entertaining.) So it is a good book to start out with to give you a basic overview of the story - not that all versions of any given Arthurian romance are the same, however. The downside is that certain significant things are omitted - things that the author probably found morally objectionable- such as the exact circumstances of how King Arthur's mother Igraine became married to Uther Pendragon. Also, Lancelot and Guinevere's relationship becomes more G-rated in this version. So does Sir Tristram and Isolt's relationship (or Iseult / Isolde - I forget how it's spelled in this version).Apart from that, however, it's a very good book in it's own right. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The ending was especially epic. And if you are a serious Arthurian fan, you'll need to read Le Morte d'Arthur anyway. So you can familiarize yourself with the spicier details of the story that way. (I also highly recommend Beroul's version of The Romance of Tristan for a more in-depth story about Sir Tristram a.k.a Sir Tristan and Iseult the Fair.)

I bought this book for my 8yo son as his interest was growing in medieval times. The book is an episodic style of fiction and the heroes of the story make much of their goodness but mostly do nothing good. There is nothing to admire about the heroes and they have no arc of growth. Stuff just happens. And then more stuff happens. Lots of killing. More killing. Then it ends. Quite disappointing as a read, and it barely held the interest of my son, a voracious reader.

King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table by Roger Lancelyn Green is a retelling of the King Arthur stories for children. The stories follow many years in the course of the Kingdom of Logres from Merlin’s creation of the round table to the downfall of the kingdom due to the relationship between Launcelot and Guinevere (which is dealt with very appropriately for child readers). The epilogue leaves the reader wondering if King Arthur is truly dead or not and whether, one day, Logres will return. Sometimes the stories are a little graphic, but for the most part this is a great collection of stories.

This is a good sized, thick book with torn edge paper. It has the feel of an adult book, but is meant for kids. The illustrations are black and white and ofter are made to look like manuscript illuminations (but B&W) and many have a Celtic intertwined motif that I find enjoyable. Arthur was a Celt, after all, and the English were Angles, Saxons, and Jutes who invaded fertile farmlands which they took for their own forcing the Celt inhabitants to Wales and Cornwall, both with little desirable farmland. I laugh when I see Hollywood calling Arthur King of England. He fought the English bitterly if we believe he existed at all. Arthur became popular after the Viking Normans conquered England and Arthur was celebrated as the fighter of the people who took the Celts place, and were now being displaced. Compare with Robin Hood (Saxons were the good guys and Normans were the bad guys) for the other side of the story. There are 14 chapters here that cover the usual suspect in Arthurian lore.If I had to criticize it at all, I would say it is a little cramped in presentation and presents itself as if it has more inertia than a more modern book. Personally, I like that but some might view this as a bit dated. Guess what? It is old-fashioned, and closer to the feel of the original stories.

Review

Praise for Nassim Nicholas Taleb   “The problem with Taleb is not that he’s an asshole. He is an asshole. The problem with Taleb is that he is right.”—Dan from Prague, Czech Republic (Twitter)   “The most prophetic voice of all . . . [Taleb is] a genuinely significant philosopher . . . someone who is able to change the way we view the structure of the world through the strength, originality and veracity of his ideas alone.”—John Gray, GQ   “Taleb grabs on to core problems that others ignore, or don’t see, and shakes them like an attack dog on a leg.”—Greg from New York (Twitter)   “For my wife and me, Antifragile is an annual reread.”—Colle from Richmond, Virginia (Twitter)   “I read Antifragile four times. First, to get the wisdom to survive. Second, as a memorial statement for Fat Tony. Third, as Das Kapital with correct mathematics. Fourth, as ethics to learn a good way to die.”—Tamitake from Tokyo, Japan (Twitter)   “November . . . time for my annual reread of Antifragile.”—Johann from Vienna, Austria (Twitter)   “[Taleb writes] in a style that owes as much to Stephen Colbert as it does to Michel de Montaigne.”—The Wall Street Journal

Although he spends most of his time as a flâneur, meditating in cafés across the planet, he is currently Distinguished Professor at New York University’s Tandon School of Engineering. His books, part of a multivolume collection called Incerto, have been published in thirty-six languages. Taleb has authored more than fifty scholarly papers as backup to Incerto, ranging from international affairs and risk management to statistical physics. I loved Fooled by Randomness and Black Swan and seriously disliked the Antifragility. I am very glad to say that with the Skin in the Game Taleb is back. Opinionated, at times rude and angry, but someone you feel you should listen to.When I buy books I usually read one star reviews. Some of them are crap (my book arrived with six missing pages!), but some give you a pretty good idea of what you are going to find. There is one star review that gets close to 5000 words limit, followed by the long thread of comments exchange where the replies by the original author get, again, to the said limit. If someone gets that fired up by the book that he regurgitates thousands of words - it's well worth a few bucks and I simply must read it.Anyway, as always with Taleb, I now have a new reading list based on his footnotes. Yes, he comes across as an angry man. Yes, he has irrational dislike of academics (as do I) and policy makers. Yes, some of his statements are contradictory and yes, sometimes he goes too far in his arguments. But this is exactly what makes books worthwhile the time spent reading them. Contradictions have to be sorted, but to do so you have to think about the subject and come to your own conclusions, and this involves effort, and this is what makes books stimulating.I highly recommend this book.

Skin in the Game is at the same time thought-provoking and original but also contradictory and sometimes absurd.Let’s start with the cons:1. I certainly won’t be the first to notice that Taleb can be mean-spirited. But why does he insist on presenting his views in this way? The communication of his ideas, often profound, does not require a mean-spirited or condescending tone. For however brilliant Taleb thinks he is, his skills in persuasion are severely lacking; he’s alienating a significant readership that may have otherwise been more receptive to his ideas. Not very far into the book we see Taleb take cheap shots at Steven Pinker, out of nowhere, discussing a topic that has nothing to do with any of Pinker’s actual ideas or positions. One wonders why Taleb cannot just present his ideas without the incessant personal attacks and condescension.2. His overall philosophy appears to be self-refuting. He reviles “intellectuals,” professors, and thinkers while praising “doers” and men of practice. He’s particularly distrustful of those who give advice for a living. Here’s Taleb:“Avoid taking advice from someone who gives advice for a living, unless there is a penalty for their advice.”So should we then ignore THIS advice? As far as I can tell, Skin in the Game is a work of philosophy, an intellectual exercise that argues against the value of intellectual exercise. This is the same self-refuting logic of relativism—in that the statement “everything is relative” is self-refuting because the statement itself needs to be absolute. If Taleb is wrong in any part of his philosophy it doesn’t appear that he would incur any penalty (no skin in the game). The upside for him is book sales with little to no downside risk, so by using his own logic we should conclude to not trust him. Also, to the extent that you believe ideas have power you might find yourself disagreeing with Taleb’s extreme position that no good ideas could possibly come from someone in an academic position (particularly from the reviled economists).Except that Taleb uses economic theories to frame his thinking. The Tragedy of the Commons, something Taleb discusses in his book, was developed by the economist William Forster Lloyd in his armchair. Even Taleb’s Black Swan concept is a reformulation of the Peso problem developed by...economists.I’m sure anyone can think up examples, rather easily, of useful ideas that were discovered by intellectuals or from university research.3. Taleb obsesses about the superiority of practice over academics and theory. This is a questionable proposition. As just one example, a recent study in the American Journal of Medicine concluded that “patients whose doctors had practiced for at least 20 years stayed longer in the hospital and were more likely to die compared to those whose doctors got their medical license in the past five years.”My own personal experience corroborates this, as a medical student was able to correctly diagnose what the attending physician had missed on a trip to the ER. Very experienced, practical individuals sometimes perpetuate bad habits and fail to keep informed of the theories and academics that lead to better practice. This point is completely lost on Taleb.4. Taleb’s definition of rationality as any action that promotes survival is patently false, as a simple thought experiment can show. Imagine a hypothetical survival machine is available for your use. By plugging yourself in, it will guarantee and maximize your life span and, on a social scale, maximizes reproduction. The price is that the machine also inflicts a high degree of pain and cuts you off from contact with other people.According to the logic of Taleb, the rational thing to do would be to plug into this machine. Of course, no one would volunteer to do this because survival is not what motivates rational behavior. Any rational agent would choose one year of pleasant life over 100 years in the survival machine, because actions have value according to how they promote or are perceived to promote well-being or pleasure.Taleb, using this more believable definition of rationality, could have used it to argue the same points, namely how religious belief cannot be called irrational if it promotes well-being, which includes psychological well-being and survival but not survival alone. The pros:That Taleb is antagonistic and holds some questionable views does not mean that he’s wrong about everything. When not being demeaning or taking extreme positions, Taleb writes about some of the most original, thought-provoking, and profound ideas. And even when you find yourself disagreeing with him, he makes you think. For this reason alone, the book is worth checking out.The idea that the extent of people’s stakes in particular outcomes is a critical yet underrated determinant of events is a profound idea with several implications, which Taleb skillfully explores throughout the book. And his idea that you should have to pay some kind of penalty for decisions that negatively impact others—risk sharing vs. risk transfer—is a solid framework for thinking about a host of issues. Of course, these ideas would be easier to swallow if presented with a little more humility, but I suppose we should know what to expect from Taleb by now.

If you hate BS, this is the book for you. Stop being "bullied" for what you think by academics and journalists who have no skin in the game. They have nothing to lose by being wrong (Think Viet Nam, Syrian, the 2008 economic melt down). Trust the do-ers who suffer the consequences for being wrong ( business people who take risks), This book has to be studied. It follows from Mr. Taleb's previous work which provides the science and mathematics behinds this work. It requires a "deep dive" and understanding. A casual book reviewer or journalist would not have an easy time reviewing this book. Be prepared to study, the results are very rewarding not matter what your field of interest.

This was one of my FAVORITE books as a child. My mother read it to me and I read it to my daughter. I purchased this book to read to a friend's children while they are here visiting. I grew up in Texas, and Texan's have a lot of state pride! It's not only about bluebonnets and the state of Texas, but the strength and courage of a little girl and her Native American culture as well as the overall caring nature for her community.

Found lovely handmade bluebonnet ornaments at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center for our Grands. and knew the exact books from Tomie dePaola to accompany them. Beautifully written and illustrated, these books connect children to a heritage more eloquent and mindful than flash-in-the-pan action figures and dolls.

This is one of my favorite books and as a kindergarten teacher in Texas we learn about Native Americans and the geography. I love the bluebonnets here. This book is a beautiful story about a Native American girl who sacrificed her favorite object for rain to help her nation (tribe). It's one of my favorites and my students love it as well.

A wonderful childhood memory. A beautiful tale that I've continued to share.

I love this book! As amazing as I remember it as a child.

A classic story that any child growing up in Texas should read.

Beautiful story. We paired it with a craft. The kids drew blue bonnet stems on their papers. Then, using the bottom of a plastic soda bottle dipped in blue paint, we added the flower petals. It had a neat effect!

Love this book! Happy memories of this book being read to me as a child. Unfortunately, it came dented up on the corners which was a disappointment.
