I bought this book so that I could see what recipes would freeze well from the ATK/Cook's Illustrated/Cook's Country collection. Because the book is all about "making ahead" it offers more recipes than just those that you pop in the freezer. Don't get me wrong, there are a bunch of them, marked with "Freeze It" above every recipe that they deem freeze worthy. But there are also a bunch of other types of make ahead recipes. Like, overnight, make a day before, set it and forget it in the crockpot, etc... At first, I was irked like a lot of people who have commented about the freezing thing, but then it dawned on me that:1. It says Make Ahead in the title, not Freeze2. This could actually teach me something here :)If you're like me, Monday through Friday is exhausting. When I get home from work, I am too drained to even think about what to eat, let alone cook it! I love to cook though and always enjoy it like a hobby on weekends. SO, what this book made me think was that there are some recipes that I can freeze for later in the coming week, or even way ahead of that, and some I can prep and whip together quickly Monday and Tuesday. It takes the guess work out of weekday suppers and makes it easier than starting from scratch.The other big thing about this book (if you have never made or heard of America's Test Kitchen recipes before) is you can rely on these folks. These recipes are not hit and miss and this book is not going to collect dust. Make enough of them, and you start noticing techniques repeat into a habit, like blooming spices and garlic in oil, and you feel more confident as a cook. At least that has been the case with me. I really trust them.I do have one gripe and that is just how it is organized. It is appetizer, casserole, sauces... I wish those were sub-categories and the big categories were Freezer Recipes: appetizer, casserole, sauces...; 1-2 Days Ahead Recipes, etc. Just because I feel the need to mark with highlighters or post-its all the freezer recipes to make navigation for them easier, and I don't like marking books like this.But again, I found there to be so much good information and SO many recipes (It's over 400 pages with often more than 2 or 3 recipes on the page and even variation ideas) that I can't help forgiving them for that. :)One last thing a lot of folks may find useful and not be expecting it: There's a whole section on double duty recipes which are ones that help you do something with leftovers besides just eat them as is again.

This is a great book if you are the kind of person who wants to know the "why" you do this and not that along with what will freeze, cook ahead, or just want to do a bunch of meals!! It's very well written, easy to understand and very nice compliment of recipes. Would recommend this book for all kinds of cooks but remember this book isn't just FULL of recipes - it's has pages of how they developed the recipe so it works either refrigerated, frozen or cook now. They even tell you which ones work which way and why. Plus they explain why they use what kind of ingredients. So you know not to try something say with skim milk when it says whole milk - the product won't be the quality. It's even fun to page thru and read the different explanations. I bought this book based on other reviews of "America's Test Kitchen" cookbooks because I wanted one which had more make and freeze recipes. So glad I did!!! It has provided me with enough information that I can now figure out on my own pretty much of the basic foods I prepare what will work. I would highly recommend this cookbook!!!

This is hands-down my favorite of the Cooks Illustrated arsenal. If you're not familiar with what they do, they pretty much walk you through the conceptual creation of a particular dish and tell you everything that they were trying to do (or trying NOT to do) in their test kitchen. Each recipe reflects many trials to get the final product as universally appealing to their testers as possible.I have read most of their cookbooks cover to cover like a novel, and you end up learning so much about the food you make and the foods you're afraid to make. This particular volume of make-ahead recipes has become a bible for me. I frequently entertain lots of people, whether family or friends, and yet I'm not the type that enjoys cooking while they're all there. I like to prep in advance and then pop everything into the oven so that the kitchen is mostly clean (we're typically hanging out in there, right?) and I can sit down and have a cocktail. My problem before was that I can't stand how the food quality goes down so dramatically when you cook in advance. With this cookbook you are able to create so many dishes that you never before thought would be possible to have done any time other than last-minute.Now my kitchen is clean and I have so many more options than pot roast and new potatoes.

This has been one of the most helpful cookbooks I have used. As I have gotten older, I need to be able to get much of the holiday meals ready ahead of time as is possible. I cannot talk to guests and cook at the same time, so this cookbook lets me know how many days I can keep different parts of the meal to be able to heat and serve easily. I have given it to three friends who have mentioned that they also have to plan ahead now for special meals. Shirley C.

I love this cookbook because it tells exactly how far ahead you can make things, how to package them for storage, how to store them. You might think that's a no-brainer but I've got other books that just say things like "freeze" without mentioning whether you cook them before or after freezing them or if you need to thaw them before cooking them. This takes all the guesswork out so your food comes out perfectly every time.

This trusted cook book from COOKS ILLUSTRATED, has long been one of my well "dog eared," favorites. It has recipes from appetizers through desserts to make ahead. Be assured they will be family favorites. I have sent this book ahead as a hostess gift, as I turn to these when I am planning for house guests. I am ready for a new volume, as this one (still great!) is now sixteen years old.

Excellent reference guide for engineering students when taking Statics and post-Statics courses, as well. Has a lot of useful information and explains everything in a concise, easy-to-understand manner. More effective than most engineering university textbooks, I'd say!

When I started this book I was hopeful that it would make statics an easier subject to understand and it delivered. Like most text books today the book does have some information that does not need to be there which is admitted by the author, however if you have a science or math oriented background some or all of that information is useful. Statics is a tough subject to learn and the author makes the information easy to understand and the subject matter is related in a manner that anyone should be able to get it. I would recommend this book as an addition to any text book for a statics course or for the person just wanting to learn a new subject.

Now I will be honest, this will not magically work wonders for your understanding of Statics as a whole, because practice will do that, but it will provide an excellent explanation in a way that may be more understandable to you. It's definitely worth a shot. It worked well for me and I hope it will work for you as well.

The book was well written and covers much of the material I needed for my first semester of Statics, although I did not seem to notice any fluid statics in the book. I have yet to actually read the entire book but I found it helpful as a condensed presentation of common concepts and a good way to understand some ideas that are not perhaps explained well in the textbook.

I was struggling some with some basic concepts of statics. It helped tremendously! I think this is a great addition to the library of the student engineer.

I'm glad I bought this book. It goes over most of what will be on my exams. It doesn't have a lot of example problems, but it explains how to do them in great detail.

Great for introduction to statics whether you're trying to get leg up in class or just to make yourself seem smart to friends with a ridiculous contraption in your garage that seems to defy gravity. I read through it before my first class lecture and was able to do the first 2.5 HW assignments without even knowing my professor's face.

I bought this as a refresher on work I did before I retired. Good material and easy to comprehend.

I really enjoy reading travel memoirs, or books by people who have lived in other countries for a while. While some of the book was interesting, I found the author very annoying. She comes across as spoiled and entitled. She fails to finish her commitment to teach in Nepal, and complains about her host families asking for things, people wanting to know how to get to the US, etc.

Jennifer shares her personal account on the sights, smells, and tastes of Nepal and Thailand. Likewise, she allows the reader into her emotional journey. Her animated character sketches add to the enjoyable read. I've never read a "travel memoir" where I keep turning the pages to read about what happens next; this book is the first. Jennifer Alderson’s descriptions, writing style, and personality all make this a great read. Five Stars!

For anyone who has never traveled to a country whose culture is different from your own, you don't know what you are missing. It's an incredible experience, as this journey through Nepal and Thailand portrays. The author's story is whimsical and at times flirting with danger. For those who have traveled, it's the trip home that actually is more of a culture-shock, than the places visited. Travelers expect and anticipate differences, but once experienced, we look at our own culture with entirely new eyes. This book gives you that look at Nepal and Thailand, and I recommend it for anyone thinking about taking a trip ... anywhere.

Reading Notes of a Naive Traveler, I felt like I was meeting up with a friend as she undertook the trip of a lifetime - a friend who happens to be observant and thoughtful.

This was fun, enlightening reading during my flight to Kathmandu. Recommended reading if you are planning on visiting Nepal and want a down-to-earth perspective.

In this phase of my life when time is scarce travel becomes the casualty, but thanks to the eloquent and detailed ticket that authors like Jennifer Alderson buy on our behalf, along we can go for the ride into the most exciting, uncomfortable, frustrating and exhilarating backwaters of our planet -- without the need to risk our digestive system on the questionable water and dubious plumbing.I had the advantage of having traveled to Thailand some years ago, so that with more than half the book in the Himalayas and the balance in my familiarity, I was able to identify strongly with that part-2 of the travelogue and so set a gauge for me to sense how accurately she captures the spirit of a place.I am happy to say that my experience aligns precisely with how she characterized Thailand; I have confidence then that I can fully trust her opinions from the Himalaya."Notes..." is a wonderfully engaging companion that took me to the Himalaya a place I'd love to someday see but am unlikely to ever reach. It did more than send me down the well worn path of Jane or Joe tourist, instead, it gave me an in depth view into the lives or ordinary folk I'd pass on the street of a backwater but likely learn nothing about.To Jennifer then I say "thank you!" This is a rare gift indeed.Keep traveling for me and us.

Her youthful enthusiasm is charming - everything is 'amazing', 'gorgeous', 'incredible', etc, though now and again I felt I would have liked to read about the place as seen through more mature eyes. The most interesting parts of the book, for me, were her observations about the day to day habits and culture of the Nepalis and just little incidents that happened. Her 'characters' really jumped off the page.On to Thailand, and Jennifer experiences the westernised tourist route of the famous Khao San Road and rejects it for more of the 'real' Thailand, though she was disappointed that the hill tribes lived not in mud huts but in shacks with corrugated tin rooves, with motorbikes and trucks parked outside, and that the caves where the Buddhist monks worked were strewn with electric cables. Generally, though, her time in Thailand sounded so wonderful it almost made me whimper with longing.I'd say that anyone who is thinking of visiting these countries, Nepal in particular, should take time to read this warts-and-all account, especially if they're signing up for the volunteer work that entails being placed with a family. Jen comes across as a very open-minded and non-egotistical sort of person; maybe why she felt like a fish out of water in the working world of Seattle, and wanted to experience different lifestyles. I'd definitely read more about her travels; I liked the conversational tone of this book very much.There are pictures, too ~ always a plus, with a travel guide!

I purchased this book because I had aquired some antique marbles at an estate sale. With this book I was able to identify the individual marbles. In fact, some of the ones I had gotter were quite valuable! If you frequent yard sales, estate sales, auctions, etc. you will certainly come across mason jars filled with old marbles that in fact way be worth quite a tidy amount. I would reccomend this book to anyone who speculates on these items. It is facinating reading as well, as the history and manufacturing processes are outlined and explained in detail.

I am in a clinical psychology doctoral program and this is one of my favorite books I've purchased during my program. This book is easy to read and covers a variety of topics related to ethical dilemmas and our field of practice. I would highly recommend for any doctoral student wanting to learn more about the code of ethics and clinical practice.

I have to have this for class, but it is a joy to read. It's informative, interesting, and I love how they put in case studies of ethical decisions made to further illustrate points.

This is a fabulous book. Can't believe it's a textbook. The case studies help to bring the information to life. I know that I will be reading this long after my Psych Ethics course is done.

How can there be so many words, and yet, so little to say? Watch "the Office" and take notes on how to properly teach ethics.

i didn't realize it would be a hard cover with its own flap cover so that was a great surprise! Well packaged and arrived just in time for my classes to begin!

Love the case studies, wish they were a bit more detailed but they do the job. Quick shipping. Came in excellent condition.

An architecture monograph is typically organized chronologically until Rem Koolhaas/OMA came out with S, M, L, XL which was organized by size. BIG, whose Bjarke Ingels used to work for Koolhaas, uses a different way of organizing his monograph. Hinting it with sustainability, it is organized by temperature of the place. This book is definitely the ultimate monograph of BIG, covering all their projects to date. Unlike regular monograph (take El Croquis as an example) which is to show the projects and how to build them (technical drawings, detail, etc.) and S, M, L, XL which was the first monograph to show the story behind each project interspersed by Koolhaas' essays on architecture/urbanism, BIG concentrates more on how rational conceptual ideas become buildings, featuring their signature conceptual diagrams with added explanations. These explanations are what make the book great by giving the insights into where those ideas came from. Otherwise, the book is just the hard copy of BIG's website.

The rainbow design on the sides of the book indicate the level of care that went into this beautiful book, which features renders and photographs of tons of amazing architectural projects.
