This book is by Radu Florescu, who co-authored the more successful (and still in print) "In Search of Dracula."In Search of Frankenstein is an investigation of the historical roots of the iconic Frankenstein, a story that was - famously - born in Mary Shelley's nightmare.Because of the veritable treasure trove of historical and cultural information available to be mined as possible fodder for Bram Stoker's creation, the Dracula book is more likely to be enjoyed by the fans of that novel, whereas, this book is much more likely to be enjoyed by fans of the author, Mary Shelley.The most interesting elements of this quick read are the character studies of the literary band of travellers consisting of Lord Byron, Dr. John Polidori (author of 'The Vampyre: A Tale"), Percy Bysshe Shelley and Mary Shelley and Mary's stepsister Claire Clairmont. A major source for this aspect of the book is "History of a Six Week's Tour," written mostly by Mary Shelley. The 'History' also contains a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley: Mont Blanc.The reasons that this is the most interesting part are (1) The strong impression that Florescu gives that the story of how the novel, Frankenstein, came to be is as much myth-making as the novel itself, and (2) there just isn't that much solid or useful information on any historical foundation of the novel. Yes, there was an aristocratic German family named Frankenstein. Yes, there was a controvertial theologian, doctor and alchemist, named Johann Conrad Dippel, who was born at Castle Frankenstein. The bulk of connecting these things to the creation of the novel is based on the possiblity that the Shelleys MAY have heard about these things during their travels. This is not at all implausible, and of course, the name 'Frankenstein' must have come from somewhere, but that's pretty much the beginning and end of it. Florescu falls back again and again on the relationships between and among the members of the travelling party, as there's really not that much else to write about.All in all, I enjoyed this book.

The Frankenstein myth, or story, existed long before Hollywood and Boris Karloff got to it. In Mr Florescu's fine book, he has searched out and actually found the sources for these tales and the actual Castle Frankenstein where some of these stories had their beginning. There's the legend of Georg von Frankenstein and the "dragon monster" that terrorized the locale and how he did battle with it. There's another story that dates from the early 18th Century about the alchemist Dippel who claimed to have been able to create gold from base metals and also dabbled in the creation of an artificial man. Both these stories and a few others, Mr Florescu more than aptly proves, were more than likely the influence on Mary Wollstonecraft when she and the English poet Shelley had made their excursion down the Rhine.Fascinating history of the whole area and of the lives of Mary, Shelly and Byron living together in Switzerland.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is as intrigued as I am by such people and events. Don't pass this one up!

The author was at a considerable disadvantage when he went in search of Frankenstein - there is no one historical figure who corresponds to Victor Frankenstein the way Vlad Tepes corresponds to Dracula.He solves this quandry by spending most of the book in search of Mary Shelley's travel itinerary instead, which can be interesting, but also as dreadfully boring and stuffy as any early English travelogue. Celebrity gossip about Percy and Byron is used to fill in extra pages - again interesting, but not what the cover promised.Overall, this was not the book I'd hoped for, a book that explores the history of the mad scientist concept as thoroughly as the vampire has been covered. It may still be worth reading, but only if you know what you're getting into.

He received on loan from their archives all 6 volumes of CM's Home Education series. Karen began reading. Experimenting through trial and error, she began adapting the principles to her home life. Upon returning to the States in 1987, the Andreolas arranged for the republication of the 6 volumes. I've been researching homeschool practices and resources for the past year, because I strongly feel that this is what I'm meant to do as a first time mom and onward. For one, I don't have a lot of faith in the current education system in place, but even more importantly I believe the rewards of homeschooling will be so great, and rich, and personal for my children, an experience the public school may not be able to give. I discovered the Charlotte Mason method to resonate with me the most profoundly. The depth of love of learning and values expressed in Karen Andreola's book are exactly what I've been looking for. I highly recommend "A Charlotte Mason Companion" to be read by anyone who wants to bring back the true love of learning in education, in a way that their children and them selves will be enriched by, not just for a period of time that will be drilled in through lifeless acquisition of facts, only to be lost and forgotten, but for a meaningful, curiousity-driven yet structured, and joyful lifetime.

I wish I had this when my children were toddlers. It is a wealth of information and inspiration. I would have liked to have been able to implement the ideas earlier in my children's lives, but it is still very much applicable at the ages of 8 and 9 and older. Plus, it is addresses attitudes and character development in children as well as caused me to examine my own. I love this book! Lots of ideas and resources.

Great book. A lot of good advice and information on Charlotte Mason and her teaching method (as well as how the author implements the CM method herself). Some of the wording is a bit hard to follow- kind of rambling, sometimes archaic style. It's not impossible to understand, but if your audience is mainly busy parents looking for homeschooling information, it would be nicer to have things written for ease of reading and understanding, not eloquence. Good read, but a very long one.

I am really enjoying this book! The chapters are short, but have wonderful little nuggets of information without being to long and drawn out. Looking forward to implementing the techniques shown in this book! I only wish that it had a list of good real books to use, but there are other books that do and online as well.

This is one of my go-to references for inspiration and instruction on the homeschooling life. (Another must-read is Teaching from Rest by Sarah Mackenzie.) It will challenge you to higher aspirations, reinforce the reasons you why you are homeschooling, introduce you solidly to Charlotte Mason's style and beliefs, remind you not to panic but let the process take its course. And it may make you fall in love with homeschooling all over again.

This book explains homeschooling in a more relaxed and natural way (without unschooling) that I wish I had learned years ago. My children are beginning to enjoy their schooling, instead of just tying to get done and get it over with. I am so thankful to have found this book.Another very good Charlotte Mason style resource is called Real Learning in the Heart of the Home, by Elizabeth Foss. Although the book is written from a Catholic perspective and I am not Catholic, it was another very helpful resource.

This is a beautifully written and thorough introduction to the Charlotte Mason philosophy. What makes Karen Andreola's book so magnificent is that she not only tells you what to do and how to do it, she tells you WHY!!! That made all the difference to me. She also demonstrates a very strong command of the English language, writing with spectacular elegance and ease.Andreola has also taken a very personal approach in this book. You feel as if you are taking tea with a trusted friend as she reveals her personal testimonies, and narratives. I thought this was a crucial underlying strength in this work, because I found Charlotte Mason's philosophies to be complicated and arcane at first glance; whereas reading this book quiets your spirit and makes this an enjoyable journey. I also found tactful admonition for the preconceived notions I conjured up about Charlotte Mason and her so-called "gentle learning" approach. Take my advice, don't believe everything you hear on a chat board. Peruse this marvelous overview to get the facts, and then make up your mind as to whether this makes sense for your home school.Immensely enjoyable and valuable guide. Karen Andreola truly is the perfect Charlotte Mason "Companion"!5 Stars.

This book and it's photography is incredible. The pictures are all in black and white which gives it a nice professional look. Karras captures the many types of beautiful women and their differences which makes all women look beautiful.

Nick Karras's lovely photos capture that most delicate and unique of a woman's features, her outer genitals. Over forty examples appear here, printed in a warm, almost romantic monochrome. Because of the intimate nature of these photos and because of each viewer's personal associations, responses to these photos are sure to be highly varied and individual.One response simply takes these organic forms as visual abstractions. Viewed that way, simplicity of the basic structure and complexity of the variations create a rich balance that human artists rarely achieve. Another viewer might see these anatomical photos, isolating just of her body's features, as depersonalizing. Paradoxically, one could also see these as deeply personal. Outside of doctors, most people encounter a vulva (other than one's own) only in deeply intimate settings. It seems quite proper that a woman might reserve the most distinctive parts of her physical self for those who already appreciate her uniqueness most. A book like this helps the viewer realize just how wide the range of possible appearances can be, and so emphasizes the individuality of each one.This book goes well beyond Femalia in some ways. The number of pictures are actually a very small portion of the overall book and it is two to a page. When I first started this book, I thought of someone ranting of how women were conveyed in a negative way. However, that has always been the case in history. As I read more, I understood the deeper meaning of what Nick was trying to project to the audience.A great appreciation goes out to his work & his subjects.

Purchased for my son for Christmas (he was 10 at the time). He literally freaked out. He loves all things Zelda, and absolutely adores these books (I bought 1 and 2). He proceeded to read both in the matter of days (and this is a kid who received video games & such too). I am writing this review 9mos later, and he still grabs them when we go on road trips, etc. Great books, and I am purchasing the next in the series soon!

This was also a awesome manga adaptation of the video game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and I recommend this manga book to those who like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Ocarina of Time has always been one of my favorite video games, along with Majora's Mask, they have to be, hands down, the best games I've ever played. Part of what made me like them so much was their deep story and rich characters. But, being N64 games, the technology wasn't quite there for the developers to be able to tell a complete story with 100% full character development and structure. The cutscenes had to be reduced in order to leave room for actual gameplay; this was great since it left it to the player's imagination to fill in the blanks and connect the dots to make the story complete. What this manga does (along with Majora's Mask's manga) is expand on the game's story and focus on characters instead of fighting/battles. It's a great purchase if you're a fan of both games and I fully recommend it. The drawing are beautiful, taking inspiration from the anime-like style of the games' actual artwork.

I had just finished playing Ocarina of Time Master Quest a few days before I purchased part 1 of this manga. The manga really stays true to the game, while adding in it's own little elements! It really showed the relationship between Link and Zelda that we all wanted to see! And although Link is a mute in the game, his personality is exactly what I expected it to be, which is great. I really loved this book, and part 1, some moments actually left me touched.And of course the book is "backwards"... it's a manga. That is how they read in Japan.

I haven't read this book yet, but I just beat the game so I'll get on it soon. I didn't want spoilers. I've read a few others and even though they are categorized as children's graphic novels, I still enjoy them as an adult.

I bought it for my grandson and he loves it.

I lovelovelove Ocarina of Time, and I loved the manga. I'm only giving four stars because a few pages were ripped out, but it wasn't anything that really took away from the story, and I didn't feel like it was totally worth it to send it back and wait for a new copy.Obviously, some things are different from game to book, but I enjoyed the story nonetheless. When I ordered this, I got Vol 1 and Majora's Mask

I was looking forward to this book all week since I wanted to read it the first day it was released. Unfortunately, the book is incredibly hard to read. It's as if she's writing for a blog and no one had edited the writing (describing occurrences that go on for 3 pages when it could easily be described in 3 sentences). There are so many repeat mentions of the same stories (references to one particular pair of sweat pants is one example among many). I deeply regret making this purchase and probably will not buy anything recommended by the fashion press or anything as publicized as this book.If you're a follower of blogs/fashion, it is likely you would not like this book. For people who do not follow blogs or fashion, it may be an interesting read, although hard to actually get through.

As someone who's spent a chunk of her career on the fringe of the NYC fashion/journalism scene, I really wanted to like--possibly be inspired by--this book, but ultimately these "essays" were disappointing. Odell repeats herself over and over, which makes me think she only has a handful of stories from her past she feels are worth relaying (and--oh, gee--they happen to be the ones full of name drops). The whole chapter about the VS show felt like a random stab at "real" journalism, but she blatantly admits there wasn't a story there worth reporting in the first place. Why on earth, then, did it wind up in the book?!

I've been following Amy's writing online since she started out at the Cut, and have always loved her hilarious & witty writing style. This book is a really fun look into the fashion industry from someone who's followed it closely for years but never really succumbed to the craze of it all. My background is in tech, so fashion is a bit of a mystery to me, although I can appreciate it. If nothing else, books like this are a reminder that every industry is a bit wild and crazy when you're on the inside. I definitely enjoyed reading it!

She tries too hard in her writing, which felt unnatural and far-fetched.No need to explain all and everything in excruciating detail! Being succinct would have been more appreciated by the readers.This book didn't inspire me, on the contrary very exhausting tuning into it...

She is too cautious .... The book is so boring..... Every time you think she's going to tell us something we don't know, a new chapter comes along , drawing out a scene few ever see or care about .👎

I'm going to school to work in the communications side of fashion, and like the author, sometimes find myself laughing at my peers. This is such a great and hilarious book that takes the 'snooty' out of fashion. It follows her career from begginings, reporting at parties and being awkward at it, to being an editor, and all the in betweens; great light read.

I was hoping this would be a good read for my fashion students, but I couldn't finish it. It wasn't interesting enough.

Tales From the Back Row takes you behind the scenes of the New York fashion world and the celebrity party circuit--rarified places few of us get to enter. Odell describes her experiences as a young reporter and blogger working her way up from the bottom rung of the journalism ladder. She sees through the fashion world's fancy facades to reveal how ridiculous much of what goes on there really is. While the book is funny, entertaining and a very enjoyable read, I also found it heartfelt and honest. I think it will appeal to most everyone looking for a fun read. Millennials and people interested in fashion and the media will find it indispensable.
