I feel I am a rather harsh reviewer so it has to be good for me to award five stars. A Tale of Love and Darkness is quite wonderful and richly deserves high acclaim.A bildungsroman... a family saga... a memoir about growing up in the newly formed state of Israel, A Tale of Love and darkness held me from the opening sentence to the last.A non-jew, I have never understood the relentless persecution of the Jews over the centuries and I have always believed in their right to a homeland.Oz is an intellectual and free thinker and acknowledges throughout the book the suffering of the Arabs as well as the Israelis. He describes his thoughts as a child from a right wing family when he is obviously influenced by the opinions of the adult world he is surrounded by, to later in life when he joins a kibbutz and discovers his own sense of morality.Life was harsh and frightening for everyone in those early days of building a new nation from scratch under the hostile, unfriendly eyes of the Britishwith never-ending threats of attacks from the surrounding Arab nations and none more so than for someone like Oz's mother. A beauty from a privileged background in Eastern Europe, well educated and speaking several languages, she must have felt the weight of being plunged into the struggle in those early days of Israel. Relegated to household chores and mandanity for her entire life, taking a backseat to her scholarly husband and the other male members of their community I can understand to a degree how unhappy she must have been. She loses herself in fanciful tales she relates to her young son and maintains a close friendship with girls from the same school and background in Eastern Europe. Her story touched me deeply.Overall this is a story of great understanding and compassion, of intelligent observation, and deep thought.Although it is rather a large book I could have gone on reading. A powerful story told against the backdrop of one of the most enterprising and courageous and yet sad and problematic situations in history, that still makes the headlines on a daily basis.I encourage you to read this magnificent story of the making of Israel and the people who struggled to make it happen.

I wouldn't call "A Tale of Love & Darkness" by Amos Oz an autobiography. I would call it a memoir; a memoir of love and darkness of Jerusalem; the new state of Israel; kibbutz life. I would call if a memorial for his mother, who took her own life at the age of 38 when Oz was about 13.Oz's account of life in Jerusalem will make you laugh, cry and feel deep compassion for the early settlers who lived and died through the War of Independence in 1948. This was a time when Jerusalemites could be killed purposefully by the enemy for emerging from the house simply to bring in the laundry or to play with a toy in the backyard.You will feel the agony of young Amos, who, even unto manhood, endeavours to come to terms with why his mother chose suicide. She may have been manic depressive, decades before such a condition was recognized and treated.Oz is a writer's writer. He inspires admiration and envy in any writer with his use of language, so rich in description, so capable of expressing humour, gentleness, affection, poignancy and nostalgia.Opposed to the heart-rending account of his mother is the humour which is at times outrageously funny, for instance in his portrayals of Ben-Gurion and Menachem Begin. The Begin account in particular brought so many tears to my eyes from laughter that I had to keep wiping them away in order to see what I was reading. Briefly, he tells of the time he and his grandfather were in an auditorium to hear Begin orate. It seems that old Biblial Hebrew had changed to a much more compatible version of Hebrew to be used for everyday life. This was the new Hebrew that the young Sabras (born in Israel) were using. But not Menachem Begin who continued to plow on in old Hebrew. The word for "arm" as in armament, had changed in the new Hebrew to mean something to do with the F word. Begin plowed on, loudly asking who was arming nations, and asking who would arms the Israelis! What the boy heard was the F word, over and over again. The young boy could not contain himself and burst into hilarious laughter, which he couldn't control. To make matters worse, they were sitting in the VIP seats at the front of the auditorium. Out his goes in a flash, being dragged by the ear by grandpop.Amos Oz came from a family of scholars and writers. He wanted to be a writer. For a while in his teens he thought one had to live an adventurous like in great cities such as Paris (the Hemingway influence) to become a writer. Then he happened to read the Ohio stories by Sherwood Anderson. He realized that a writer writes what a writer knows. S/he writes about everyday people involved in everyday events, the spirit of the place, the hopes, the struggles, the ongoing dreams and the aborted dreams.Along the way, Oz creates great literature: a veritable feast for the reader.The book is brilliantly translated from the Hebrew by Nicholas de Lange, who is professor of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at Cambridge University, England. De Lange is also an ordained Reform Rabbi. He received the Risa Domb/Porjes Prize for his translation of "A Tale of Love and Darkness."I am one of those voracious readers who devours books. This one, this "A Tale of Love and Darkness" - this one I read slowly, in order to savour every precious word.

As I neared the finish of Oz's A Tale of Love and Darkness I slowed down, not wanting it to end. The author uses the device of repeat and build with about a dozen - of hundreds - of specific memories, the most telling of these his mother's suicide, about which we don't get all we are going to get till the last page.Many, many paragraphs are studies in how to write, how to draw out emotion in readers, how to talk about, how to find the right tone for narrating events that have been damaging to the speaker, and how to reveal the worst thing of all - shame.This memoir is a masterwork, and for people - like me - who know the bare-bones history of the creation of the State of Israel, but never deeply considered the emotions - especially the chasmic gap between what was promised back home in Galicia and the reality, the politics, the poverty, the shortage of work for a million refugee intellectuals with three million opinions, as well as the interminable waiting, waiting, Oz's book is an education. It has helped me better understand some of my friends who lived through this history. Five stars!

As a fan of Tony Danza, and a high school teacher with forty years in the classroom, I thought this might be an interesting book. I think it actually exceeded what I was expecting. His trials, tribulations, and rewards in the classroom are very real. This is not made up drama, he really very quickly came to understand the frustrations so many teachers feel today as well as the joys that keep us coming back year after year. This book should be required reading for every future teacher (especially upper grade levels), every school board member, every administrator that has forgotten what it's like in the classroom, and every legislator making rules for the schools should be beaten with this book until they have read every last word. Good job Tony!

I loved the book! It was wonderfully honest. My sister and a neighbor, both teachers, also loved it.I had the pleasure of meeting Tony Danza which was exciting. He said that the experience changed his life.I’ve since bought several more of these books to share with other teachers and also in my Little Free Library.I highly recommend this book.

I truly hope that this does not come off as a tale of my experiences in the classroom.After spending 30+ years teaching elementary school, I can vouch for Tony Danza. He truly understands what teachers go through every single day. Trained as a history teacher, Danza turned to a boxing career and then a very successful show biz career developed. But he always wanted to teach. He was given the one year job to teach at one of Philadelphia's toughest high schools. But of course it was all taped for a TV show called TEACH.During his one year experience, Tony learns that teaching children subjects, is a lot different than teaching subjects to children. He engaged his students, he laughed at himself and with his students and many times he broke down and cried.Tony realized early on that teaching is one of the least respected, most difficult jobs ever. IMHO, this book tells it just the way it is. If we continue to engage in the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND scenario, we will be doomed forever. Teachers need to allow themselves to walk in the student's shoes,as Danza writes. Try to figure out why they do not want to learn. Find a way to make them want to learn by making learning fun. And above all, have administrators that praise teachers, not degrade them for the silliest of issues.I don't think that I have ever read a better book on how to do a good job teaching. No college class, no textbook, no administrator, no other teacher has ever hit the nail on the head, as well as Tony does in this great read.It is not the teacher's fault, although there are some bad teachers. It is the responsibility of both the parents and the teachers to make certain that their children understand how valuable a good education can be.I really have to tip my hat to Tony Danza for trying to help as many children as possible, while fighting parents, administrators, secretaries etc. If we could all try to understand how difficult it is to teach a classroom of students and make changes which enable teachers to do their thing, we would all be much better off.One of the teachers at Northeast High in Philly gave Tony a plaque/scroll on his last day. This is what was inscribed, which to this reader is perfection, as far as a teacher is concerned."The inscription in the scroll tells the story of a huge storm that roils the sea and washes thousands of starfish up onto the beach. The clouds break, and the sun comes out and begins to bake the starfish. A man wanders by and sees the thousands of stranded stars. He doesn't know what to do at first, but then starts to throw them back in the water one by one. Another man come by and says to him, 'What are you doing? There are so many, you're not making much of a difference.' "The first man bends and picks up another starfish, throws it in the water and says, " Made a difference to that one."Education in the USA must change and it must change quickly for the better. Stop throwing money at the issue and let the teachers do their jobs without interference of having to teach to some ridiculous test.Danza understands and by reading this marvelous book, maybe one starfish will understand also.

I'm so glad this was on sale this weekend, or I would have missed this experience. I was unable to put it down once I started. Heartwarming, heartfelt, and gut wrenching as Tony takes us on his journey with the students in the sophmore English class he's teaching. It's terrifying to realize that we are treating our children, THE FUTURE of this once great nation, so poorly. It's hard to believe, in this day and age, that 'almost 50% of our children don't get their high school diploma!' (per Tony's graduation speech). As one reviewer said this book "Should be required reading" for all Americans!!! Thank you Tony, both for putting in the effort and for sharing that effort with us. The lives you touched will never be the same! Also, thank you for being the person I've always suspected you to be. Based on this book, you would still make a great teacher.☺

I wish all politicians would read Tony Danza's memoir about his two-semester teaching stint. His experiences match my 25 years teaching Developmental Reading at the college freshman level. The situation in the U.S. today is serious and ubiquitous in our urban schools. So many teachers have tried so hard to fulfill all expectations with no support from politicians or parents that failure is imminent and burn-out, typical. Danza'a expression of wavering between self-deprecation and self-applause describes my teaching experiences with urban teenagers. Danza's creativity, persistence, self-reflection, and flexibility in his teaching were admirable. Someone needs to arouse parents, congressmen, and the general public so they will stop expecting teachers to fix a broken society. I wish this book could be that wake-up call before our U.S. citizens are no longer able to maintain any semblance of a democracy.

I bought this book thinking it was a memoir of sorts regarding a time in Mr Danza's life where his job was teaching. I guess that's true to an extent. I was a little disappointed to find out that it was simply a chronicle of what was to be a short lived reality show. To be fair, Mr. Danza spent very little time talking about the show and instead concentrated on his students and the struggles facing teachers today. I give him credit for hanging in there and finishing the school year long after he knew the show would not make it. As far as the book goes, I enjoyed the parts where he gave a little glimpse into some of the lives of his students and the issues they were dealing with. At other times the book seemed a little preachy.

If you are a serious student of the Battle of Little Big Horn, the Campaign of 1876, George Custer, the 7th Cavalry, or the Indian Wars generally this is an essential book. Biographies, statistics , descriptions of almost every imaginable aspect of the battle and the participants. I have only had my copy for several weeks and I refer to it constantly. Highly recommended. To understate it- an important contribution to the study of the battle.

If you are to study the events in Montana of June, 1876 concerning the fights on and near the Little Horn River there are a few essential, basic references; the transcripts of the Reno Court of Inquiry, good maps both historic and current and Participants in The Battle of the Little Big Horn. The last because of all things this was an uncertain affair conducted by a host of players and related later with varying consistency by many of them and "you can't tell the players without a program." This work won't give you opinion, it will give you facts with which you can begin to form your own.

I can't figure out the nasty reviews of this book (by same person?) as they just don't fit with the book itself. This is a splendid book by an acknowledged and respected expert on the battle, the events leading up to it, and the aftermath. In this last book in the series, I was so captured by all that was happening and how it all ended that I had to take a few day to just let it sink into my soul!Sara Ella has written a FANTASTIC series and I've loved every single book!This last book really gets to the heart of it all. We are confronted with the thought that in all of us there is the chance for light and darkness to reside. It's what we allow to be the most present which truly matters.I was on team Joshua for most of the series, and yet in the end I was pulling for Ky. I saw how Ky really did have a deep love for Em, and how he was willing to do what was best for her. Now, I'm not saying I didn't see the good in Joshua. In the end I could see his love for Eliyana, but in a different way.There were a few surprised along the way that I didn't see coming!Wow, Sara Ella truly is a skilled author! The words and descriptions of each reflection level is so GOOD. I could truly picture it all in my head. This world is so fun to think about. Now I go around wondering if there's a wormhole or threshold near by. Or if a person is really a shadowwalker. You never know!This book (and whole series) is packed full of action, suspense, drama, with bits of humor and also bits of sweet love.I highly highly recommend you read this book! It will keep you up way past you bedtime!

I admit I'm always hesitant about reading the last book of a series I love. The endings don't always turn out as I expect. Sometimes that's a good thing. There are so many twists in the final chapter of The Unblemished trilogy. But it was everything I feared, everything I hoped for, and everything I wanted. It was the perfect ending to the story of characters I dearly love.

Great ending to the series. I liked how things came full circle. At times, I could tell I was reading YA but it was a story that was good for all ages.

Another beautiful story in this series. It's an amazing read with characters I love. Well done.

I kept wanting to tell Eliyana what was true and false, but alas she couldn't hear me. *sigh* I longed for El and Ky to be reunited, and when that sweet moment finally arrived, all. the. feels. I also loved the additional perspective of Ebony! A character I originally hated became one of my favorites.And I'm still #TeamKy for Eliyana, but I'm also for a #happyendingforjoshua. Always. <3 So I'm #TeamJoshua, too. I love both boys. LOL! My heart ached doubly for Joshua. However, I understand why Sara Ella took the direction she did, and I applaud her for it. I would not have been strong enough to do it.Five Stars ~ Unbreakable was nothing like I expected and more that I ever could have hoped for this final *moans* book. Truly, a wonderfully written, almost poetic, look back at the Ferrari-Ford wars of the ‘60s. While the writing is flawless, the same can’t be said for the research . All the major players (make that suits) are mentioned. Three names are notably missing, all engineers: Klaus Arning, Ed Hull and Chuck Carrig. Klaus Arning was largely responsible for the design of the suspension on the Ford GT40 (and Cobra II, and Foyt’s Coyote Indy cars). Ed Hull was the engineer who designed the Ford J-Car which morphed into the Ford Mark IV that won the 1967 Le Mans race. Chuck Carrig was the computer program whiz responsible for design and development of Detroit’s first computer program to calculate suspension geometry, which greatly assisted Klaus Arning in the design of his unique anti-squat/anti-dive suspension of the GT40, in what was a rush job to make the 1964 Le Mans endurance race. The use of a computer as a part of chassis design is mentioned on page 89 (but without crediting the engineers behind the programing).The expression “Go Like Hell” that the author has chosen for the title of this book, while not copyrighted and very much part of the public domain, is used several times in my novel “The Ragged Edge” (published in 1999). The first time I heard it was while listening in to the cockpit chatter of a Chicago-LA flight I happened to be on. The plane had just cleared Chicago airspace and I heard the captain say, in response to the control tower, "time to 'Go like hell.'" I liked the phrase so much I used it to described the impatience of race driver John Wagner, the protagonist of my novel. He loathed standing still and needed to always “go like hell,” whether on the track or, at, the end of book, en route to Chicago, to win back his ex-girlfriend, who had walked out on him. The plane he’s on over L.A. seems to hover in the sky, making Wagner uneasy. “Go like hell” he says under his breath. When he feels the jet thrust come on, forcing him back into his passenger seat, he feels better. — author Richard Nisley.

For people addicted to the car disease this is one super book. I thought I was pretty tuned in back when Hank Deuce decided to go for Ferrari's jugular. But this book revealed all kinds of stuff I missed-- big and little. Big stuff, like the fact that Enzo Ferrari had an illegitimate son. Little stuff like Bruce McClaren having one leg shorter than the other. Also a detailed description of Carroll Shelby's Cobra and Mustang GT350 operation at Los Angeles airport. And a lot of new info on Ken Miles-- one of my heroes because of his MG Specials. And so much more. I worked for an ad agency on Wilshire Blvd. in L.A. in the mid-'60s and would drive my MG TC home to Redondo Beach on Pacific Coast Highway every night for two reasons: 1. To hear the car's neat exhaust sound in the tunnel under LAX's runway. 2. To drive past the parking lot for Shelby's operation to see row after row of finished Cobras and GT350s. And I would covet them! Big time! Please don't tell God. Weekends were spent at Riverside, Goleta, Laguna Seca and other tracks watching names in this book race. I didn't give Mr. Baime's book Arsenal of Democracy" a very good review because, unlike this Ford/Ferrari book, I didn't really learn anything new. Maybe that's because I've read a lot about Ford in the last 60 years. But Go Like Hell is really one helluva book so go like hell to order it.

I'm a huge auto racing fan. I'll get that out right away. However, it takes an excellent and accomplished writer to be able to bring excitement to the reader, while at the same time, relating non-fiction that is both relevant and factual. A.J. Baime has done just that! Awesome to learn so much about both Enzo Ferrari and Henry Ford II in the same book. My gosh, John Surtees, John Miles, and Carroll Shelby are all new heroes of mine!! Get this straight, if you like sports cars, intrigue and action, and exciting reading that relates historical fact in a very readable fashion, you'll love this book!

Great little book! The writer, who I've spoken with regarding something my mother spotted in the story; that being a certain man had come from Aston Martin - where my mother was John Wyer's secretary from 1949-56 - this man didn't do any of the things he claimed. My mum knew JW very well, and the likes of many of these drivers.... She took care of this guy named Shelby when he arrived at Aston's in 1954, and my dad took care of the DB3S that Carroll drove in both local UK events and LeMans 54. Never being a FORD fan, the GT40 was only a Ford in name because they paid the bill... and supplied the Engine. These first cars were all designed and built in England. What they did was great, the amount of $ spend was million times more than "great", whereas the politics and Board of Directors was typical Ford MoCo nonsense.... Phil Hill was booted from team, only to be a HUGE thorn in Henry II side when Phil showed up at LeMans in Jim Halls Chaparrel! It's a good read, and if you're from my era you'll know these drivers names... I knew many of them, some came to lunch on off-Sundays like Ritchie. Now they are all gone... I remember when my dad passed away 5+ yrs ago, Shelby called mum, mum said "I have no one to talk to now" Carroll said, "you can talk to me!" And they talked regularly.... almost til the day he went. Great men, great cars, great racing!

I loved this book! My only wish was that it were longer. I hated to see it end. As a teen I followed every Sebring, Daytona and Le Mans race that the author recounts. I lived and breathed car racing in that era, especially the Ford versus Ferrari rivalry. I was also living in Rome, Italy at the time, and the Le Mans race was broadcast on the radio. My friends and I actually listened as the Fords finally won.To this day the GT 40 is my favorite racing car of all time. This book was written just for me and I read it in one sitting. What a great story, and what great research has gone into this book. As others have pointed out the Ford Mark IV end story is short and the book coverage of the next two Le Mans victories is also short -- as they were by older Ford GT 40s and not the Mark IV. But that's small stuff. Go like Hell is a wild ride!
