This was just as the title described, "Italy's best trips" but the itineraries were quite lengthy and didn't jibe with our 8 days in the country. If I'd browsed through the pages in a bookstore, I wouldn't have bought it. Also in the age of smart phones, I'm not sure how relevant accommodation recommendations are. We almost didn't take it with us - and didn't refer to it while we were there. We left it with our Airbnb host in Florence.

We've driven and traveled several times to Italy, and recognize that a single book cannot possibly cover the entire country. But, if you would like a pretty good overview of the entire country and where you might want to go (next?), this will serve the purpose. Suggestion: buy a used copy or even a previous edition used -- less than a buck.Pros:+ Several road trips covering the entire country; Tuscany is the usual suspect.+ Superficial -- OK for broad strokes but no road map here.+ Tear-out map of Italy includedCons:- Lack of depth -- you will need a more focused guide and you smart phone may be all you need.- Feels "commercial" -- a collection of tourist brochures.So, if you can buy it cheaply enough, four stars for a good overview of Italian road trips or as a starting point for further research.. Very good short book about the 1962 Mets. They were probably the worst team in MLB history. Breslin takes a light hearted look at them and look at what brought it all about. Any baseball fan should like this and especilly New York Met fan.

The Mets. It's a franchise that has frustrated and delighted fans for decades. From the early days of record losses to amazing series wins and back again. It's a rollercoaster ride. This book focuses on the beginning, the 40 wins and 120 losses days. A retrospective for Mets fans that could elicit smiles or a reminder of those miserable days. It was a rough start with some colorful characters but the Mets gathered a loyal and patient fan base. Part of the reason for that might be the Brooklyn Dodgers fans who experienced disappointment and elation for many years and who were starved for a National League team to call their own. It's a quick read and well wotrth the time.

this is a short book by Jimmy Breslin about the 1962 NY Mets. This was the first year of their existence and they were comically inept as recounted in the pages of this book. They ended up losing 120 games which is a record. The team managed by 73 yr. old Casey Stengel , was made up of players who were castoffs from other teams and veteran players who had seen their better days. The Mets filled a void in New York after the Dodger and Giants had left and this team through their play and colorful characters won many New Yorkers over. Breslin has a talent for relating humorous stories, I particularly liked where he wrote that the Mets were going to give a Birthday cake to their first baseman Marvelous Marv Thornberry but decided against it because they were afraid he 'd drop it. While there are no pictures in this paperback edition, there is an appendix listing the 1962 Mets by position and it is interesting that one of the 1st baseman-Gil Hodges would become the Mets manager leading them to the World Series in 1969 with another member of the '62 team playing 1st base- Ed Kranepool. This is a great story of the Mets first year. As Tug McGraw once said " you gotta believe."

Breslin was a fantastic writer and he was never better than chronicling the story of the 1962 New York Mets, by most accounts, the worst team in MLB history. The National League had abandoned New York City in 1957 and five years later a new franchise was born made up mostly of cast offs from the other NL teams. All clubs had to give up two men each to the new Mets and Colt 45s.Rajah worked from his home base in Chicago. Seeing American League games wasn't a problem as the White Sox played mostly at night, but all of the Cubs games were in the afternoon, and this was cutting heavily into Hornsby's time for racetrack plunging, a real annoyance for him.Here's a comment about other clubs' possible castoffs that Hornsby made one Wrigley Field afternoon:"They say we're going to get players out of a grab bag. From what I seen, it's going to be a garbage bag. Ain't nobody got fat off eating out of the garbage, and that's just what the Mets is going to have to do. This is terrible. I mean, this is really going to be bad."So tell us what you REALLY think, Raj!Was he ever right! Their first season, the NY Mets lost 120 games, doing so in the most creatively colorful way in baseball history.On the occasion of his 73rd birthday, manager Casey Stengel drew thoughtfully on a cigarette, sipped a Manhattan at a hotel bar and recalled a particularly shocking game. He told of bringing a catcher up from Syracuse who could possibly control action on the basepath against a steal-intensive Dodgers club:"...I don't want to be embarrassed. So we bring him and he is going to throw out these runners."We come in there and you never seen anything like it in your life. I find I got a defensive catcher, only who can't catch the ball. The pitcher throws. Wild pitch. Throws again. Passed ball. Throws again. Oops! The ball drops out of the glove. And all the time I am dizzy on account of these runners running around in circles on me and so forth."Makes a man think. You look up and down the bench and you have to say to yourself, 'Can't anybody here play this game?' "

He brings a journalist's eye to his images of countries and their people. He was inspired by his daughter, an editorial and portrait photographer in New York City, to pursue photography more seriously.Jay has been voted one of the Best Doctors in New York. For the past 30 years, he has reported nightly on medical news for WABC-TV, and--together with other ABC NEWS staff--won a Peabody Award for coverage of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Edward Sri’s “A Biblical Walk through the Mass,” is an excellent introduction to the biblical antecedents of the Catholic Mass for the general reader. Each part of the Mass is addressed, in the order of the Mass, in brief (four- to seven-page) explanations of the element’s textual and theological roots in the Bible. Sri focuses more on the Jewish connections than those to the early Church. Thus, under Creed, Sri discusses the "Shema," but only mentions the Council of Nicaea (A.D. 325), at which the Creed was formalized, in reference to the 2011 publication of the new translation of the Roman Missal.Although one applauds the brevity of the discussion of the parts of the Mass, one would hope for a little more on the meaning of the Eucharist, especially given the richness of the literature (including "Lumen Gentium," the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church of the Second Vatican Council). The Eucharist, of course, is a sacrament, and that means that there is a bodily aspect to it: we move, we drink, and we eat. Aside from a few elements like the Sign of the Cross, Sri does not treat gestures, implements, and the ministers of the Mass, all of which have their Jewish antecedents, and which are critical to truly understanding the Mass. He does, fortunately, talk about bread, wine, and water (see Sections 13 and 14). When Sri does address the Mass’s ministers, it is understandably the priest he mentions, apart from his discussion of the homily, but the importance of the entire gathered community cannot be overstressed. (In the rare error, he identifies the minister of the Dismissal as the presiding priest rather than, properly speaking, the deacon unless a deacon is not available.)Despite those sundry reservations, this book is an appealing addition to the catechetical literature, both for new and aspiring Catholics as well as the Catholic layperson seeking a better understanding of the parts of the Mass. The general reader will appreciate that Sri eschews dense and unclear writing. In short, “A Biblical Walk through the Mass,” is easy to read, and one unfamiliar with the Old Testament foundation of the Mass will be enlightened.

I would put this book more in the primer category than an in depth study. This simple book is updated to the new translation and is a piece by piece walk through of the Mass. Each action and prayer are discussed and the scriptural roots described and cited. Clear and concise, but not without substance. It is an excellent first step for the cradle Catholic who takes things for granted and a nice resource if someone makes a simple and common objection to the liturgy with its ritual from some of our Christian brethren. I was hoping for something more in depth, but it was a nice first read.

I would recomend this book to any one seeking to better understand the Mass or Catholic doctrine relating to it. I wish Dr Sri would have included more comparisons to the latin vulgate as well as traditional and modern translations thereof, possibly as either appendices or footnotes so as not to slow down the flow of the book. That said, this is a very readable book. Any layperson without a theological or linguistical background will be more than able to enjoy it. Yet it is deep enough that a life long and well educated catholic will still appreciate and learn from it. Dr Sri simplifies a complex topic while still giving it due respect.

This book truly brings out the fullness of the Mass and the richness of the symbolism in it. The Biblical evidence for each part of the Mass is explained well and the chapters are easy to digest. There's not a lot of philosophy/theology here, just a practical analysis of what happens at each part of the Mass.I highly recommend this to every practicing Catholic. Attending Mass on Sunday is one thing, experiencing it in the light of this work is another. It has brought personal focus for me and now I can experience the Mass in a whole new way.

If you have ever wonder why about any part of The Mass then the explanations in this book will "open your eyes." I am not yet totally through the book...about half way but really enjoy and know what is going on and how amazing it is that Jesus is THERE!Glad I found this book and have recommended it and sent it to friends and family.

I read this book years ago. Back then, I had seen various prints of his and always thought they were really neat looking pictures but that's about it. It never even crossed my mind that there may be meaning behind his work. One day when I was at m local library I saw this and picked it up because I was bored. After reading it, I learned that he had to come up with new ways of expressing himself just because there weren't adequate means to do so using traditional forms. I'm not much of an art lover at all but after reding this book, there is just something about this artist that just kind o f speaks to me and is one of the few in this world that I just understand.When my now teenage son got an assignment at school to do a report on him, I had to go out and pick up this book for him so I could share the magic with another generation.

I loved learning about Escher’s work from the artist himself. This isn’t a book highlighting his works; it’s a out Escher discussing his work.

If you ever wondered where Escher got his ideas for his art, and what was he trying to express with it, this is an eye opener. He starts with his vacation in Southern Spain with the art of the Alhambra Mosque and moves on to use his art to explain the 'infinite,' in two dimensions. An easy read with great info into the mind of a wonderful artist.

This book arrived in very good quality condition and complemented another Escher book I bought as a gift.

A wonderful opportunity to read what Escher himself thought about his craft. Beautiful to read how he felt when observing the drawings in the caves in Lascaux, France and how important it was for him to have been there. A mastercraftsman pondering on the first craftsman.

I bought this book used and when I received it I was amazed at the condition. It looked new! Just a little bend at the corner of the cover and some of the pages.An excellent book for those wanting to find in depth information about Escher and his tessellations. Not lite reading!

I think I was under the impression that this was a bigger book or something, but I wish it had bigger, better pictures. This is a paperback with lots more writing than pictures. Small pictures and not a ton of them. Decent book from what I've skimmed.

Pretty dang good, but not what I call "good as new". Considering differences in taste and opinion these folks did do me right. It was a quick ship, and a very very good book for the money! I would buy from them again no problem.

 The Story of Snow is one of Julien's favorite books. Not only does this book contain stunning pictures of dozens of snow crystals, but it also explains the creation of snow in ways that will engage children young and older. The entire life of a snow crystal, from creation to withering, is included in the book with special emphasis placed on the uniqueness of all crystals and the imperfections that we are likely to see. The easy to read text and great imagery make this book special, and the final page about how to catch and observe crystals will allow kids to try out what they have learned on a snowy day. Teaches how snow forms in a way little ones can understand. I thought the diagrams and limiting what was shown on each page really helped kids focus. I think the overall simplicity feeling when flipping through the book is much better than the jam-packed pop-up text boxes and over color pages of other kid science books.

This is a fabulous book full of great pictures and information about snow. Enjoyable for adults and children who love snow.

This book does not translate well into a kindle edition book. I haven't ever seen the book in person, but I would imagine it is laid out more logically.

My class of preschool kids enjoy this look at snowflakes. While it may be intended for an older audience, the 3 year olds in my class have requested this book over and over. We carefully trace the speck of dirt becoming a snowflake and carefully count the "points" on the snowflakes each time. Excellent book!!

Beautiful photos of snowflakes...the real deal! Excellent details to make this a keeper for children. Would also be a wonderful tool for those teaching children!

This is a good book for children and adults alike. With pictures and descriptions (not too long, not too short) it acquaints the reader with the basics of snow, how it is formed and why it looks like flakes.

This book is just something fun to know. I bought this for my grade school grandchildren. We live where it doesn't snow. Thought it would just be fun to teach and then go to the mountains to the snow this winter.
